Merrill Negus Obituary

Negus, Merrill SCOTIA Merrill B. "Gus" Negus, loving husband of Mary Ann Zachar Negus and son of the late Merrill A. and Ida Mae Negus, passed away June 29, 2014. He was a graduate of Niskayuna High School and served nine years in the U.S. Submarine Service as a diesel engineer specialist. He worked for 36 years on the Delaware & Hudson Railroad as a freight engineer, retiring in 2004. After retiring, Merrill enjoyed volunteering on the USS Slater DE 766 in the Port of Albany. He liked reminiscing with his buddies at railroad retirement luncheons, and he loved spending time with his family and his three beautiful grandchildren. He is survived by Mary Ann, his loving wife of 49 years; son Andrew (Alissa); daughter Melinda White (George); and his three grandchildren, twins George and Leah White, and Avery Daviero. We would like to thank the staff of Ellis Hospital, especially nurse Linda on the sixth floor, whose concern and compassion was a great comfort to all of us. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the USS Slater Destroyer Escort Restoration Fund, Broadway and Quay Street, Albany NY 12202. Calling hours will be held on Wednesday, July 2, 2014, from 4 to 6 p.m., at the Glenville Funeral Home, 9 Glenridge Road, with a prayer service to conclude at 6 p.m. Committal services will be conducted Thursday at 10:30 a.m., at the Gerald B. H. Solomon National Cemetery, 200 Duell Road, Schuylerville. Online condolences may be expressed through the Glenville Funeral Home website at glenvillefuneralhome.com.

D&H Engineer Extraordinaire. The definition of extraordinaire is someone who is out-of-the-ordinary and extremely skilled in a particular field. "Gus" fit that description perfectly. He was a great teacher and a wealth of knowledge. Condolences to his family. May he rest in peace.

Mary Ann, So sorry to hear about our beloved Gus. Our thoughts are with you and your family. Gus was a very special friend to me, helped me so many times, and was a pleasure to be around. We have fond memories of the few times we got together with you and him. He was a great Engineer who taught myself and many other young men about the true meaning of railroading. Again, so sorry for your loss.

My family knew Merrill when he was a young adult in Alplaus where we attended church together. He was a few years older than I, but I vividly remember him as a good hearted young man with a great sense of humor who enjoyed many conversations with my dad, Charlie Bopp.

I offer my sincere condolences to his family for this terrible loss.

Gus always impressed me as a very capable engineer, and was always quiet and professional about his work at the D&H Railroad. I knew he was former Navy, as I was. Very sorry to hear this, a very decent man.
