Sherman, Orcelia
TROY - Orcelia B. "Obie" Sherman, 94, passed away on Sunday, August 24, 2025.
Born in North Greenbush, she was the daughter of the late Ralph E. Bellamy and Dora Knauer Bellamy. She was predeceased by her husband, John Sherman, in 1984.
Obie was educated in Albany and Troy schools and was a proud graduate of Troy High School, Class of 1949.
On June 2, 1951, she married the love of her life, John, and together they raised five children on Brunswick Park Drive in Brunswick, N.Y. She had the gift of hospitality-her doors were always open, and you never knew who might be at the house or dinner table.
After raising their children, Obie and John became business owners, running J&E Home & Auto, Inc. in West Sand Lake, N.Y. This was a sweet time for them, spending their days together.
In her later years, Obie was known in the neighborhood as someone who lovingly cared for children. Her home was a safe and welcoming place where kids could gather, ride bikes, and always find a snack or a cool drink. Over the years, she collected bicycles and tricycles so that no child would ever be left out of a neighborhood ride. In the summertime, she handed out popsicles and encouraged the children to enjoy the fresh air and sunshine. Her unwavering love and dedication to all children inspired everyone who knew her.
She is survived by her children, Lynda Beazley, Susan (Jim Manzer) Sherman, Jonni Marie (Keith) Welborn, and Carol Beth (Andrew) Chase. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Sean (late Rebecca) Beazley, Sara (Marvin) Veeder, Courtney (Thomas) Smith, Alyssa Jackson, Malia (Frank) Leo, Jim (Nicole) Manzer, Molly (Jeffrey) Snyder, Zakary (Elizabeth) Sherman, Joseph Manzer, Lydia Sherman, and Harley Walker; her eighteen great-grandchildren (with two more on the way); as well as several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
In addition to her parents and husband John, she was predeceased by her son David (Susan Quest-Sherman) Sherman, and her sisters Elizabeth Hunt and Ann Lamitie.
A graveside service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, September 26, 2025, at Oakwood Cemetery, Troy. Family and friends will gather at McLoughlin & Mason Funeral Home at 10:30 a.m. and proceed in procession to the cemetery.
