NISKAYUNA - It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of our much loved mother, daughter and grandmother, Pamela McDevitt, Executive Director of the New York State Bar Association (NYSBA) and former JAG lawyer, who died on January 4, 2026, beside her two daughters.
Pamela's life was defined by a profound commitment to both her family and the pursuit of justice. She was the heart of our family and a guiding force to all who knew her. Her unwavering love and compassion touched the lives of many, from her closest loved ones to the countless colleagues, clients, and communities she served throughout her career.
She was a graduate of Rivier University and earned her law degree from the University of New Hampshire School of Law. She served as a captain in the U.S. Army JAG Corps, and then was a practicing attorney in Schenectady, N.Y. In 2006 she became director of Law Practice Management at the New York State Bar Association, and in 2010 she served as a director of the American Bar Association. In 2017 she returned to the New York State Bar Association as Executive Director.
Pamela's legacy is one of tireless advocacy, especially for the rights of the poor, the marginalized, and the disenfranchised. As an attorney, she dedicated her career to defending those most in need, tirelessly working to make the legal system more just and equitable for everyone. Whether serving as a JAG lawyer or leading the NYSBA, she brought a unique blend of skill, empathy, and determination to every cause she was involved in.
Her dedication to her profession and the people she served was matched only by the love she shared with our family. She was a light and safe space that made wherever she was home for those who knew her. Her passing leaves a profound void in our hearts and the hearts of all who knew and loved her.
We will remember her not only for her incredible accomplishments but for her kindness, compassion, and unyielding support for those who needed it most. She leaves behind a legacy of strength, justice, and compassion that will continue to inspire those who follow in her footsteps.
Pamela is survived by her devoted mother, Marilyn Boland; her loving daughters, Megan McDevitt, and Samantha McDevitt (Rick Newkirk); her grandchildren, and greatest joys, Parker June McDevitt and Ricky Newkirk Jr.; her daughter-in-law; her brothers, Russell and David; and a wide circle of friends and colleagues. She is reunited with her cherished son, Kevin McDevitt; and her father, Russell Boland.
A Mass of Christian Burial celebrating Pamela's life and legacy will be held at St. John the Evangelist Church, 810 Union St., Schenectady, on Saturday, January 10, at 12:30 p.m. There will be no calling hours. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to
Community Hospice, in appreciation for the compassionate care extended to Pam, and to the Upper Hudson Planned Parenthood, where she served on the Board of Directors.
Pamela McDevitt will be deeply missed, but her spirit, her work, her commitment to justice and love of family will live on in the hearts of all who had the privilege of knowing her.
