Paul Griffin Obituary

ALBANY Paul Edward Griffin, M.D., of Albany, peacefully entered into eternal life on March 14, 2006 with his loving family by his side. Paul was born on August 13, 1922 in Herkimer, N.Y. to the late Clinton B. and Mary Crough Griffin. It was on July 16, 1949 that he married his wife, Ruth Harriet Mace Griffin, R.N. He was a graduate of Herkimer High School followed by pre-med school at Niagara University, Medical School at the University of Vermont, internship and residency in Hartford, Conn. and at Albany Medical Center. Paul also served in the U.S. Air Force as a captain during the Korean War, stationed at Limestone Airbase in Maine. Paul started his career in private practice in Johnstown, until called away to serve in the Korean War in 1953. In 1955, he continued his employment with the federal government, working at the V.A. Hospital here in Albany. During his service, he was a teacher and colleague, specializing in infectious disease and internal medicine, retiring in 1996. He had many obstacles to overcome during his life, beginning at two years of age when he contracted polio, to the time of his passing while battling cancer. The years in between were full and fun-loving. Paul enjoyed traveling and camping. He was always the teacher, making every vacation a learning experience. He enjoyed reading and watching sports, and was an avid fan of the New York Jets. In addition to his parents, he is predeceased by his son, Christopher Paul Mace Griffin. He is survived by his beloved wife of 57 years, Ruth Harriet Mace Griffin; his children, Mary Alice Faulkner and her husband Thomas, and Clinton B. Griffin and his wife Karen; his grandchildren, Christopher Paul Knapp, Daniel Gardino, Jamie Lyn Ruth Griffin and Katie Rachel Griffin. He is also survived by his sisters, Frances (Brady) Thomas and Jeanne (Charles) Kotary; and by several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held in the Hans Funeral Home, 1088 Western Ave., Albany, Saturday morning at 9:15 and 10:00 in Holy Cross Church, Western Ave., and Rosemont St., Albany. Relatives and friends are invited and may call at the funeral home Friday 4-8 p.m. Interment with military honors will be held in the spring in East Cemetery, Williston, Vt. Those who wish may make memorial contributions to Shriners Hospitals for Children, Office of Development, 2900 Rocky Point Drive, Tampa, FL 33607-1460 or to Community Hospice of Albany, 445 New Karner Rd., Albany, NY 12205.

Dear Aunt Ruth, Mary, Clint and families,

We were certainly saddened by the news of our Uncle Paul's passing. It was reassuring though to know that he went peacefully with you all by his side. Tom and I will always have fond memories of him and Aunt Ruth's trip to Alaska. We had so much fun together and laughed so much over several crazy antics. That is when he got dubbed, "Dr. Danger"! Our thoughts and prayers are with all of you during this difficult time.

Love, Chris and Tom Farrington

Dear Ruth-

I am so sorry to hear about Dr. Griffin's passing. As we were fond of calling him "Chief Doctor", he will always remain in my heart as someone who cared deeply for the veterans he served during his years at the Albany VA. His caring smile and warm ways were always admired by the staff.

His deep love for you was always evident, and his dedication to your family strong. Our sympathy in your loss,

Fran and Dave Peters
