Robert Davies Obituary

DELMAR Robert (Bob) I. Davies, MD, 83, died on October 24, 2006 at the St. Peter's Hospice in Albany, N.Y. after a long battle with illness. Bob was born to the late Levi and Laura (Roberts) Davies on February 20, 1923 in his parents' home in Poultney, Vt. His first language was Welsh. He met the love of his life, Olive Morris, when he was 10 years old, she eight. Prior to being drafted into the Army, he played minor league baseball and was scouted by the Boston Red Sox. Bob lost his leg in Europe while serving as a sergeant in World War II with the 7th Army, 14th Armored Division, known as the Liberators because the division liberated more concentration camps and POWs than any other division. He received the Bronze Star, the Purple Heart, the Good Conduct Medal and the Combat Infantry Badge. He graduated from the University of Vermont undergraduate and medical schools. Bob had his internship and residency training in radiology at the Mary Fletcher Hospital in Burlington, Vt. and the Boston Children's Hospital in Boston, Mass. He practiced radiology for 30 years at the Franklin County Hospital in Greenfield, Mass. and at the Amsterdam Memorial Hospital in Amsterdam, N.Y. He was in the forefront of radiation oncology and diagnostic medicine. Bob enjoyed woodworking, carpentry, baseball, fishing, card tricks, checkers, the Red Sox and his Welsh heritage. He was affectionately known for his love of jokes (both good and bad) and his unmatched ability to tell a great story. His humor and warmth endeared him to all. Bob leaves behind his best friend, soul mate and beloved wife of 57 years, Olive (Jo) Morris Davies, MD, who was, without question to him and their children, the luckiest thing that ever happened to him. He was adored by his sister, Marian Potter of Tucson, Ariz.; and his five children, Laura (Douglas) Davies Tilley of Arnold, Md., Leigh (Larry) Davies Krohmal of Delmar, N.Y., Wendy (Karl) Davies Eckert of Arlington, Va., Beth (George) Davies Carpinello of Delmar, N.Y. and Robert (Alison) Davies of Voorheesville, N.Y. He was Taid (grandfather) to, and will be painfully missed by, Ashley and Atalia Krohmal, Robert and Alyssa Tilley, Olivia, Alexis and Lucas Carpinello and Robert and Bryn Davies. A funeral service will be held at noon, November 4, 2006 at the Poultney United Methodist Church in Poultney, VT. The Rev. David Adams, pastor, will officiate. Interment will follow in the Poultney Cemetery. A reception will follow at the Fair Haven Inn in Fair Haven, Vt. and all are welcome. Donations in the memory of Bob may be sent to the Disabled American Veterans, 215 North Main Street, VA Medical Center, White River Jct., VT 05009. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the Roberts-Aubin Funeral Home in Poultney, Vt.

Our sincere condolences to the Davies and Tilly families. We did not know Mr. Davies directly, only through our daughter, Barbara, who shared with us what a remarkable and engaging man he was. Our thoughts are with you.

I knew Dr. Davies only from a great distance and then only through the hearts and eyes of his daughter, Laura and her husband, Doug. I learned of his experiences in WWII and of his return and endeavor to become a physician and a healer. I know that he touched thousands of people over the course of his life and that he and his wife modeled for their children a way of living that is compassionate, warm, intelligent, courageous and giving. May your love for him accompany him as he journeys forth.

I know that he received back from his children the same generosity of spirit that he was known for himself. May that spirit follow him where he now goes.

My deepest condolences and heartfelt sympathy to the Davies, Krohmal, Tilly, Carpinello and Eckert families. Taid was a truly great man: with Jo, the warm and witty center of a loving family; a magnet for friends, strangers and those lucky enough to enter his orbit; a loyal and steadfast American; and a grateful son of Vermont and Wales. He will be missed most by the close-knit family he leaves behind, but also by a large number of us fortunate enough to have had their lives enriched by his friendship -- something I thankfully had for 30 years.
