Romeo Tamayo Obituary

Tamayo, Romeo V. MD
LATHAM - Dr. Romeo Velasco Tamayo, affectionately known as Tito Romy, Romy, Dr. T, and Lolo, passed from this life peacefully, at his home in Latham, on October 29, 2025, at the age of 82, after a long illness.
Born on November 2, 1942, in San Andres Bukid, Manila, Philippines, Romeo was the beloved son of Rufino and Salud Tamayo and cherished brother to Napoleon. Growing up in Manila, he developed deep family values, a strong work ethic, and joyful humor that would carry him throughout his life.
Romeo attended Arellano High School before pursuing his dream of medicine at the University of Santo Tomas, where he earned his Pre-Med and Doctor of Medicine degrees. He was a proud member of the UST Glee Club, where his love for singing flourished. His deep appreciation for music remained throughout his life, especially classics by Frank Sinatra, Perry Como, and Tom Jones, holiday music, and church hymns.
On August 5, 1970, he married the love of his life, Zenaida Bulatao, at St. Vincent de Paul Church in Manila. Together, they embarked on an extraordinary journey, leaving the Philippines to build a life rooted in faith, perseverance, and opportunity. Their travels led them from Manila to Georgetown, Guyana, then to Perth Amboy, New Jersey, before settling in Albany and later Latham.
A devoted physician guided by compassion and gentle patience, Romeo dedicated 33 years to his practice as a primary care physician in Ravena, N.Y. He cared deeply for every patient, especially the elderly, treating each person with dignity and grace.
Romeo's life was marked by sacrifice and unwavering love. He worked tirelessly to build a future for his family, opening doors that allowed them to experience the world, pursue education, and cherish life's joys. Even from across the globe, he continued to support family back home, remaining a devoted eldest son and brother.
Romeo lived life with warmth and humility. He loved ballroom dancing, bowling, golf, and Mah Jong with his friends in the Bayanihan Association. He also enjoyed playing basketball and cheering on his beloved New York Yankees and Knicks. He brought laughter everywhere he went with his playful expressions, from his signature Filipino "Oy!" to his joyful "Goody goody" and "Wah Wah Wee," often sung playfully like a melody.
A true gentleman, he rarely raised his voice, yet his children knew that one expressive look could say everything they needed to hear. He could even find humor in unexpected moments, such as accidentally snacking on dog biscuits while taking his medication.
Above all, Romeo treasured his family. His proudest legacy lives through his beloved wife, children, and grandchildren; whose lives are forever shaped by his example of humility, kindness, and boundless love.
Romeo is survived by his devoted wife of 55 years, Zenaida Tamayo; and their sons, Ronald (RJ), Rommel (Maria Luz), and Ryan (Telia). He is also lovingly remembered by his grandchildren, Liam, Madelyn, Kaitlin, Sawyer, and Miles; sister-in-law, Emma Tamayo; nephew, Napoleon Jr.; and niece, Cheryl Samaniego (Richmond). He was preceded in death by his parents, Rufino and Salud Tamayo; and his brother, Napoleon Tamayo.
Romeo's family extends heartfelt thanks to the dedicated caregivers who lovingly supported Romeo throughout his illness.
Visitation will be held at St. Ambrose Church in Latham, on November 6, beginning at 9:30 a.m., followed by a Mass of Christian Burial, at 10:30 a.m., celebrated by Father Brian Kelly. Inurnment will follow the service, inside the mausoleum at Most Holy Redeemer Cemetery in Niskayuna. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Romeo's memory to the Alzheimer's Association, 1003 Loudon Road, Cohoes, N.Y. 12047. Condolence book and memorial page at bowenandparkerbros.com
