Ruth Hipwood Voorhees
1921 - 2021
Voorhees, Ruth Hipwood SLINGERLANDS Ruth Hipwood Voorhees passed away on January 15, 2021. She was born in Watervliet on March 8, 1921... yes, Ruth almost made it to 100! She was the daughter of the late Charles and Theresa (Reuther) Hipwood. Ruth attended the Mildred Elley Business School and was employed by the Albany Felt Company as an executive assistant. Ruth married the late James E. Voorhees, Jr. on June 24, 1966. Upon marrying him, she became a mother to his four children: the late Susan Nowlin, the late Peter Voorhees (Pam), Martha Blackman (Bob) and Carol Voorhees, whom she lovingly embraced as if they were her own. She was predeceased by three sisters: Theresa Walsh (Frank), Mildred Blauvelt (Dr. Peter) and Janet Hipwood. She is survived by three nieces and nephews, Adella Spohr (Richard), Charles Walsh (Vicky), and Frank Walsh (Marjorie); six grandchildren: Christie Waldmann (Doug), Peter Blackman, Sandi Hanifin (Dan), Charlie Contompasis (Megan), Jamie Contompasis, and Stace Contompasis; three grandnieces and nephews; Barbara Lewis (Richard), Carla Jones (Terry), and Robert Blauvelt; and many treasured great-grandchildren and great-grandnieces and nephews. Ruth will always be remembered for her style and grace. She enjoyed traveling with her loving husband of 42 years, wintering in Florida, shopping adventures with her niece Dell, and cherished family gatherings. She was a communicant of St. Thomas the Apostle Church, a member at the Albany Country Club - where she proudly had two holes-in-one, and a past member at The Belleair Country Club in Belleair, Fla. The family is eternally grateful for the warmth, love, and care she received from Melissa, Sophy, Barb, Denise, Xiomara, Trey, Amanda, and Sandra during the final year of Ruth's life. We were blessed to have them in addition to all of her loving friends and staff at The Beverwyck. There will be no calling hours due to the COVID-19 virus. A celebration of Ruth's life will be held at a memorial Mass in St. Thomas the Apostle Church in Delmar at a time when it is safe to gather. Those who wish to honor Ruth may send a donation in her name to St. Thomas the Apostle Church, attention Pastoral Care Department, 35 Adams Place, Delmar, NY, 12054.
