Scott McAndrews Obituary

BISHOP, Calif. Scott McAndrews, 37, died suddenly Thursday, April 6, 2006 while acting as a ski patroller on Mammoth Mountain in Mammoth Lakes, Calif. He died acting in the service of others. Scott was born in Scranton, Pa., and is the son of Isabelle and Briggs McAndrews of Niskayuna. He grew up in Delmar and graduated from Bethlehem Central High School in 1986. While at Bethlehem, he was a member of the football team and received many local and regional awards. Scott graduated from Penn State University in 1991 with a B.S. in exercise science. While at Penn State, he was manager of the Nittany Lion football team for four years and is a member of the Football Letterman's Club. He graduated from the University at Albany in 2003 with a degree in special education. For 10 years, Scott worked for the Pacific Crest Outward Bound School, including time as an instructor. As an Outward Bound instructor, he was particularly interested in and adept at working with urban youth and young people dealing with major challenges in their growth to adulthood. Most recently, he was a member of the Mammoth Mountain Ski Patrol and resided in Bishop, Calif. He was just voted Rookie of the Year by his peers on the ski patrol and believed that their presence was the foundation for others' safety. He loved mountains and rock climbing and felt there was no place he'd rather be than on the mountain. Scott had a deep love of the mountains, a deep concern for the preservation of nature and its beauty, and a passion to act in humane ways. In addition to his parents, he is survived by his sister, Donna McAndrews and husband Michael Pipa, nephew Cole Pipa and niece Isabelle Pipa, all of Niskayuna; and grandparents, Jean McAndrews and Jean and Dominick Pizzo of Moscow, Pa. Also surviving are numerous uncles, aunts, cousins and dear friends throughout the United States and Canada. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 9:00 a.m. Wednesday, April 12 at St. Helen's Church, Niskayuna, N.Y. Calling hours will be Tuesday from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Applebee Funeral Home, Delmar, N.Y. Final resting place will be California. In lieu of flowers, contributions in Scott's memory may be made to the Niskayuna Community Foundation, PO Box 9711, Niskayuna, NY and will be used to serve young people, including annual scholarships to Outward Bound learning experiences.

Dear Briggs and Isabelle, Donna, Helen, Bob, and children,

Our deepest sympathy to all of you. Although I have not seen Scott in many years, my first memory of him is as a sweet, sensitive third grader in my classroom at Slingerlands. As I read the tribute in the paper, I could not help but think that he remained sweet and sensitive, helpful and giving throughout his years.

Our condolences to your family. May your deep faith help you at this time and in the future.

Dear Briggs & Isabelle, & Donna,

I was shocked to hear of Scott's untimely death. It has stirred up some touching memories. Trips to and from PSU, seeing him out there on the football field with the Nittany Lions, Wiffle ball games and Football games in the snow. Most importantly just hanging around. Though these memories hurt now, they will be the same memories that heal us with time. And the tears will be replaced with warmth and fondness.

You are in our prayers. God Bless

Dear Briggs and Isabelle,

I was stunned to read of Scott's death on the Times Union Internet. There was also an article in our Florida paper. I still remember Scott from Slingerlands Elementary. I was thinking of Mary Freeman as he was always one of her favorite students in Kindergarten. What a fine young man he became and what a beautiful write up in the TU. Please accept my sincerest thoughts and sympathy at this sorrowful time.

I am heart sick for your loss. I lived in Mammoth for 13 years and spent 10 additional years visiting. I know the power and the beauty of the mountain. Rest assured that the good people of Mammoth will give your son the respect and honor he deserves. May this give you some peace and comfort.

I did not know Scott, my mother knows the family. But having lived in ski towns for many years I have experienced the loss of several to avalanches, accidents, etc... May the entire family take solace in the fact that Scott's spirit and energy will forever remain in the mountains he loved. His friends are also his family and will memorialize him and celebrate his life. Stay in touch with his friends and visit Mammoth often.
