Thomas Meyers Obituary

Meyers, Thomas Arthur II
ALBANY - Thomas Arthur Meyers II, 62, passed away October 31, 2025, at Albany Medical Center, after being stricken.
Tom was born in Roscoe, N.Y., however his father's career (GM for F.W. Woolworth Co.) kept the family moving from several Catskill Mountain area cities/towns, to Pennsylvania and New Jersey, before finally settling in Guilderland, where he attended Guilderland High School and the University at Albany.
Tom's 33 year career with N.Y.S. offered him opportunities to work in a variety of agenciesm including Tax and Finance, Justice, Information Technology, D.D.P.C., and the Office for Persons with Disabilities, from where he retired.
Following N.Y.S. service, Tom chose to work parttime at several jobs, before he shifted into a position he truly enjoyed, with the staff at Excelsior University, where he worked until his passing.
Tom was predeceased by his parents, Thomas Arthur Sr. and Alice Lake Meyers; his In-laws, James and Nancy O'Brien; sister-in-law Isabelle (Mike) O'Brien; and numerous aunts and uncles.
Survivors include his loving wife, Ellen O'Brien Meyers, whom he married on April 6, 2001; siblings in-law, Mike O'Brien, Terry O'Brien, Patty O'Brien (Robert) Gott & Kevin (Teri) O'Brien; aunts, Sharon (Ron) Keene, Carol (Tom) Jerow; and many cousins, nieces and nephews.
Tom lived the life of a courageous warrior, who fiercely defended his independence, despite the challenges Epilepsy presented throughout his lifetime, and he never complained, accepting life on life's terms. He remains my hero.
Tom's cremation will be handled by Newcomer Cremations & Funerals, 343 New Karner Rd., Colonie N.Y., 12205. Visitation will be on Thursday, November 6, 2025 from 4 till 7 p.m.

Dear Ellen,
I am so deeply saddened by this..... you were the best thing that ever happened to Tom, and he told me that many, times.

You, quite simply, have been his strength and stay all these many years.. So often we saw families fall apart when a disability was a factor- yet in you & Tom - defied the odds. it made you both stronger. He was an amazing man & you were blessed to have one another.

I expect Arthur is waiting.

When Tom and I started at the DDPC, the agency was still a paper world & that was true for all the other state agencies at the time.

When newly elected Governor Pataki mandated all agencies transition from a paper based system to computer based operation, Tom & I had our work cut out for us.

Challenging as this task was, for Tom - he came into own and shined . He loved what he did & it showed on many levels. Tom never worked by a clock... when a task was done- to his satisfaction- then he was done. Tom was a perfectionist and took pride in his work . As the transition year progressed , I came to appreciate his endless patience. Everyone was struggling a bit with this transition but he knew how to make the complex understandable. He won them all over one at a time. There was one colleague who used the computer as a plant stand- he wouldn't even turn it on. We got past that with much laughter.

In addition to his tremendous technical skills - he was a very kind & thoughtful person as all of our Council members & staff fully appreciated .

But above all, Tom would not be defined by Epilepsy. He lived life to the fullest and he lived them on his terms. And for that,
we can all be thankful.

My deepest condolences on Tom's passing. While I didn't know him from work, he would greet me and my coworkers when we came to the Excelsior College building to pick up lunch at the Excelsior Cafe. He was always very welcoming and kind. I will certainly miss his smiling face and warm greeting. May his memory bring comfort. The world certainly needs more people like Tom!

You were always cheerful when I visited Building 7. It is hard not to say hello because you always had a good smile to share. When I visited the building recently and found someone at your desk, I was surprised and thought you were just on vacation. I was very sad to see the news the day after. Rest in peace Tom. May God meet and embrace you with His loving arms around you and may your family be comforted with the knowledge that you were a good person and cherished by many.
