WATERVLIET - Wayne E. Hughes, 81, passed from this life on Saturday, November 29, 2025, at Shaker Place Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. Wayne was born in Troy, N.Y., to Martin VanBuren Hughes Sr. and Evelyn E. (Lake) Hughes. He was raised in Watervliet, and was a 1963 graduate of Watervliet High School. He later attended Hudson Valley Community College and Stratton Business School, where he studied computer processing. He served in the New York Army National Guard from April 1964 until April 1971. Wayne was employed by Covert Manufacturing Company, Norton Company and Tek Hughes Corporation, all located in Watervliet, and lastly by New York State Department of Motor Vehicles, from where he retired. In his younger years, Wayne enjoyed camping with his family. His retirement years provided him with the companionship of family and friends, as well as quiet times afforded to him in the comfort of his home. A heartfelt "thank you" is offered by Wayne's family to Shaker Place, for their professionalism and care and to the Community Hospice for their support, guidance and end of life care. In addition to his parents, Wayne was preceded in death by his two brothers, Martin VanBuren Hughes, and his wife, Katherine, and Paul Hughes. He is survived by his sister-in-law, Ellen Hughes; his niece and nephews, Martin Hughes III, Scott Hughes (Joann), Susan Hughes Boice (Dean), Paul Hughes Jr. (Andrea) and Daniel Hughes (Meredith); as well as 14 grandnieces and nephews, 18 great-grandnieces and nephews; and 2 great-great-grand nieces. A memorial gathering of family and friends will be held on Monday, December 8, 2025, from 4 to 6 p.m., at the Parker Bros. Memorial in Watervliet. A prayer service will conclude the gathering at 6 p.m., with Pastor Laura Friedman, of Cornerstone Community Church of Lansingburgh officiating. Cremation and inurnment will be held privately.
