William Higgins Obituary

Higgins, William E. III MECHANICVILLE William E. Higgins III, of South Third Avenue, died peacefully at home, on Monday evening, December 17, 2007 in the safe and loving company of his family. Bill had courage-ously battled colon cancer for the past five years, never gave up hope, always looked at the bright side of life, and actually comforted his family during the process. Born in Troy, October 5, 1951, son of Marion McGuire of Mechanicville and the late William E. Higgins Jr. A 1970 graduate of Mechanicville High School, Bill enlisted in the US Navy, and served aboard the aircraft carrier USS Ranger in the Tonkin Gulf, Republic of South Vietnam. Previously, Bill has worked for the G.E. in Schenectady for 17 years, and Lane Pipe Co. of Ballston Spa. Carrying on the Higgins family commitment of service to their hometown, Bill has presently been the president of the E.H. Strang Hose Co. #3 of the Mechanicville Volunteer Fire Dept for many years, a former director of the MFD, a former Boy Scout leader of Troop 35, a member of the Mechanicville-Stillwater Elks Lodge, and a communicant of Mechanicville's Assumption-St. Paul Church and a former church choir member. Bill Higgins' home has been reveling in the glory of winning two of the last three MLB World Series titles that his beloved Boston Red Sox have provided to their dedicated fans. In addition to his father, Bill was also predeceased by his brother Daniel in 1978 and his sister Kathleen, who died in January of this year. Survivors include his wife of 30 years, Barbara Garland Higgins; three loving sons, Justin and fianc?e Tegan Waldron, Matthew R. and Ryan A. Higgins, all of Mechanicville; his sister Mary Ellen (Mike) Monahan of Westtown, N.Y.; and brothers, Terence (Lori) Higgins and David (Eileen) Higgins, all of Mech-anicville; along with two faithful canine companions, Rosco and Casper; and many nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, neighbors and friends. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday at 9:30 a.m. at the Assumption-St. Paul North Main St. Church. Burial with military honors in St. Paul's Cemetery. Calling hours at the North Main Street Church on Thursday from 4-8 p.m. Remembrances may be made to either the Make-A-Wish Foundation or Capital District Cancer Resource Foundation. Dear Barb, Justin, Matt, Ryan, Marion, MaryEllen, Terry, David & all family members,
My little family & I were so sorry to hear of the loss of cousin Billy. I'll never forget that day when my sisters & brothers first met Billy & his family when we were kids & how I didn't believe we were real cousins at first. I'm so happy to have been blessed with such wonderful cousins/friends throughout my growing up years & beyond. Billy has always been very special to us because as kids, he always found a way to make us each feel special. I remember the Christmas that he gave me & each one of my six siblings a new board game each, that he had picked out specially. That was so cool! I remember the excitement we all felt when Billy asked Barb to marry him & she said 'yes'! And when Barb was expecting Justin & Billy finally got to become a Dad! What a great dad he was to those lucky little boys too! He was thrilled to be so blessed with all 3 of them. You are all in our thoughts & prayers as we grieve the loss of our dear cousin Billy, He will live in our hearts forever.
Love, Donna (& Tom, & Cooper & Connor)

To the Bill Higgins Family,
I am so sorry to hear about Bill passing away. I just received a Mechanicville Express/I live in Kentucky now. I went to school with Bill from grade school to high school. He was a very kind person. A real gentleman.I have a picture of him when we went to Saratoga Lake(YMCA).If anyone of the family would like a copy, i would gladly send it to you. My condolences. It is very sad the class of 1970 is dwindling.

Bill will be sorely missed at work. He was a gentleman, always ready with a smile and kind word. His love for his family was always evident. Aside from just being an all round nice guy, I hope Bill knew that for the last five years, while he battled his terrible illness, his courage and strength inspired everyone around him.
Our sincere condolences to Barb, Matt, Justin, Ryan and everyone else in Bill's family.
Rest in peace, friend.

Dear Cousin Barbie and Family:
This is one of those times that I find so it so difficult to live so far away. I wish I could be there to support you. I remember both you and Cousin Billy when we were kids and later as adults and have always delighted in saying that your children were my "double cousins". My love, thoughts, and prayers are with you but we can be assured that Billy is with the Angels and we'll all meet up again someday.

No words can describe the admiration I have for Bill. No matter how tuff things got for him, he always gave 100% both at work and in life. He was a great co-worker and a great friend. To Barb, Justin, Matt and Ryan: I want to express my deepest sympathy, you were his life and i'm glad he brought you into mine. As I often tell people, Bill and Barb's boys are the most respectful children I know and that is a true reflection on how they were raised. Bill will never be forgotten and always be loved. My thoughts and prayers are with you, Lisa S.
