William Lovelock Obituary

Lovelock, William C. CLIFTON PARK William C. Lovelock, 90, of Clifton Park, died on December 25, 2017. Born on August 19, 1927, in Brooklyn to George and Violet Lovelock; William "Bill" was predeceased by his brother, George, who died in the Pacific Theater during World War II, and brother Thomas. He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Elma Dickinson Lovelock; his children, Robin Lovelock of Fairport, N.Y., Karen Lovelock and husband Gregg Mayer of Hingham, Mass., Scott Lovelock and wife Rebecca of Fairfax, Va., and Colin Lovelock and wife Susan of Niskayuna. Bill was a family man who took great pride and joy in the accomplishments of his children and grandchildren, including Allison, Lauren, Christopher, Mark, Claire, Gregory and Eric; and he was pleased to meet great-grandson John Theodore "Theo" earlier this year. Bill is also survived by siblings, Patricia, Lorelei, and Robert. Growing up in depression-era Brooklyn, Bill was very well read and thoroughly enjoyed the study of history. In 1944, Bill enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps and served as a sniper with the first Marine Corps division during World War II in the Pacific. In 1950, he joined Troop K of the New York State Police Department in Manhattan, where he was involved in multiple high profile criminal cases, eventually working as an undercover agent to the House Un-American Activities Committee in Europe. During his tenure as a New York State Trooper, Bill was a sharpshooter, placed first on the lieutenant's exam for the state of NewYork and was instrumental in the creation of the water/SCUBA rescue team. Bill was assigned to Division Headquarters in Albany, where he was selected to be a member of Governor Nelson Rockefeller's security staff, traveling extensively with Mr. Rockefeller on a presidential mission to Latin America and during the Governor's presidential campaign. Bill was a Bureau of Criminal Investigators (BCI) senior investigator, rising through the State Police ranks and finally becoming Troop G commander in Loudonville, retiring in 1982. Bill held that words and reason could make greater changes in the decisions of man than any effort of force, and despite his skill as a marksman, he never once drew his weapon while on duty. Bill continued to serve his community as councilman on the town board of Clifton Park and was instrumental in establishing the Clifton Commons. Diagnosed with Alzheimer's Disease, Bill brought to life the values of the Greatest Generation. He stood for virtue, honesty, and humility in a time when men weren't always expected to exhibit these qualities. Always a wonderful storyteller, Bill was reliably good-natured, gentle, funny and supportive, and he will be dearly missed. Calling hours will be held at New Comer Cremations & Funerals, 181 Troy Schenectady Road, Watervliet, on Saturday, December 30, from 1-4 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations to Make-a-Wish or St. Jude Children's Research Hospital would be greatly appreciated. Bill Lovelock gave me my application to join the State Police in 1962, and followed up to make sure I sent it in. I remember that day and event like it was yesterday. I worked in a gas station in Colonie and he would stop in along with other Troopers. We followed each others careers, Bill Lovelock was a legend in the State police but anyone who knew him knew that. Bill was one of my all time favorite people and eventhough we did not see each other that often when we would meet it was like we saw each other yesterday, he had that effect on everyone. The picture says it all that smile was one in a million and then his eyes would twinkle. I along with many, many others will miss him. God Bless you William C. Lovelock.

As a young trooper in 1981, I recall that Bill always had time for his troopers, and he always provided us with encourging words of support and guidance for what was, at many times, a difficult job.
Rest in Peace, Bill!

I had the privilege of working with Bill, when assigned to Troop G. He was one of the brightest, caring individuals I knew, a real gentleman. My prayers are with his family. God bless you, Bill.

I grew up with Bill being my father's partner and friend for most of their lives. He was truly a great man, a State Police legend, and he will be missed.
