Dan Selhorst Obituary

SELHORST Dan Selhorst began a life-long career in marketing and merchandizing of the commercial textile industry in New York City. Much of his career was spent in training salespeople. His creativity and skills in motivating and entertaining people allowed him to successfully organize large national sales meetings. "Dan could take a room of four hundred people and whip them into a frenzy, make it fun, and still focus on the product" said Neil Rashba, an architectural photographer from Ponte Vedra who met Dan in 1978. Dan's career took him to many major flooring and textile manufacturers: Mohawk, Callaway Carpets, Milliken & Co., Bigelow Carpets, United States Ceramic Tile, and ScalamandrŽ Inc. Daniel William Selhorst died January 30th in his home. He was born in Coldwater, Ohio January 23rd, 1936 and is predeceased by his parents Honore Marie Hilger and William John Selhorst. He graduated from Gilmore Academy and John Carroll University in Cleveland, Ohio. "Polite, sincere, proud of his children and grandchildren" are words that come to mind from good friends. His beliefs in the principles of the Roman Catholic Church were very important to him. His interests included music, travel, skiing and sailing. "Dan loved cooking exquisite meals, and if you were not a good friend at the start of the meal, you would be by the end." He is survived by this wife, Jane Condon, two sons; Mark McQueen Selhorst, his wife Prisca, and their three children, Sullivan George, Liam McQueen, and Tallulah Rose Selhorst; and Geoffrey Charles Selhorst, his wife Sarah Boren, and their two children Ripley Catherine and Kensey Anne Selhorst. He is also survived by two brothers Lawrence Selhorst and his wife Martha and John Selhorst and his wife Mary and one sister Marcia Smith and her husband Robert. A memorial mass will held at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, 121 East Duval Street, Jacksonville, on Saturday, February 5th at 10:00am. A reception will follow. In lieu of flowers please send donations to the American Cancer Society.

Dear Jane and family,

I will miss this man so very much. This "Big Man" with an even bigger heart inspired me as a friend and mentor in ways I cannot explain in brief sentences. An example of his integrity and compassion: Years ago upon meeting Dan he discovered that I had become a new father. One day he put his hand on my shoulder and extended a $20 bill explaining "This is for your child and is meant to be spent on books. I want you to read to them as often as you can, with your arm wrapped around them so that they know you are sharing with them lovingly; it's what I did for my children."

Of course I promised him that I would do so, and did. By the way, he repeated this scenario numerous times with me. And now that I'm a father to three beautiful girls, his offerings mean so much more to me.

Dan, thank you for your thoughtful friendship... and love. Peace brother.

My thoughts and prayers are with Dan's family. I had many nice morning converstions with Dan at Starbucks and the pleasure of working with him at PostalExpress while he was helping us get our marketing started. I know he will be missed by all. Gods speed my friend!

I'm so sorry to hear of Dan's passing. I knew him through Mrs. Condon and also from Starbucks. He was always gracious and kind and had a good story or joke. I'm glad to have had the chance to know him. Linda Willis
