O GARA Elizabeth Amory Thomas O Gara, 93, passed away at Vicar s Landing in Ponte Vedra Beach, FL on October 14, 2014. Betty was born in Brooklyn, NY February 20, 1921 to the late George Amory and Josephine (Burke) Thomas. Betty is survived by her loving husband of 70 years, Joseph E. O Gara; children Constance (William) Cotter, Thomas J. O Gara, James L. (Mary) O Gara, and Alice (William) Durnan; grandchildren, Amory Mitchell, Amanda Driscoll, Christine Gregory, Diane Hagerty, Sarah Gore, William Durnan, III, Katie Durnan, Thomas O Gara, Robert O Gara and Samantha O Gara; and twelve great- grandchildren. Betty moved to Ridgewood, NY in infancy and continued to reside there and in Saddle River, NJ until retiring to Ponte Vedra Beach, FL fifteen years ago. She graduated in 1942 Cum Laude from Notre Dame College of Baltimore where she majored in Latin and minored in Greek and was class treasurer for four years. Betty was an active golfer and platform tennis player and belonged to the Ridgewood Country Club, Upper Ridgewood Tennis Club, Marsh Landing Country Club and Ponte Vedra Beach Golf and Tennis Club. Involved in women's activities, she was an officer of the Woman's Club of Ridgewood and the College Club of Ridgewood where she co-chaired the celebrated annual antiques show. An expert and devoted Bridge player, Betty won many trophies and has numerous master points. But what she is best remembered for was her wit, charm, and her outgoing personality. She loved people and parties. No list of Betty s attributes would be complete without noting her fabulous memory. Without conscience effort, she committed to memory literally hundreds of phone numbers, addresses, birthdays, and anniversaries. Her passing will leave a void in our lives impossible to fill.
