Ellis Hitzing Obituary

HITZING Ellis Wade Hitzing, Mr. Ellis, was killed in an auto accident in Alachua on October 18th. Ellis would have been 97 years old next month. He was born on a ranch in South Dakota in 1914, and his family then moved to Ekalaka, Montana. In 1926 the family moved to Florida - they did not see a paved road until they got to Lincoln Nebraska. The family finally settled in Jacksonville. Ellis had to quit school in the 8th grade to help support his family. He started by delivering groceries and ended up buying the grocery store. During WWII he served in the Army Air Corp. After the war he spent most of his work career in the auto parts business operating warehouses in Jacksonville, Tampa, Orlando, Tallahassee and Reidsville Georgia. But, he never lost his love for ranching, and in 1973 he bought the EWH Ranch just outside Alachua. He never retired, and until his death, he was active in the operation of the ranch. He was married to the love of his life, Mabel Whitehead Hitzing, for almost 69 years, until her death in September of 2009. They had two sons: Wade Hitzing (age 70), and Bert Hitzing ( age 66). Ellis was preceded in death by ten of his brothers and sisters: Thelma Crump Wilson of New Kent, Virginia; Buford Hitzing; A. C. Al Hitzing; Michel Shell Hitzing; Theodore Teddy Hitzing and Lovel Hitzing of Fort Myers; Florence Allen and Dewey Hitzing of Jacksonville, Lavina Cox and Jesse Corley of Keystone Heights. His sister, Mary Ann Soud, of Keystone Heights, survives him. In addition to his two sons, Ellis also enjoyed sharing his life as OPA for five grandchildren: Julia Hartlieb of Fort Myers; Hays Hitzing and Christopher Davey of Columbus, Ohio; Michael Davey of Valdosta, Georgia; and Julie Johnston of Lakeland. He was also OPA for ten great grandchildren: Kinsey, Emmie and Abby Johnston; Lucy and Charlie Hartlieb; Hannah, Benjamin and Leo Davey; and Albert Bertie and Lyda Hitzing. Ellis was a life long member of the Baptist church. For 40+ years he and Mabel were members of the North Main Street Baptist Church in Jacksonville. While in Jacksonville he served for more than 25 years on the Board of the Baptist Children's Home. When they moved to Alachua they joined the Santa Fe Baptist Church where he served as a Deacon. The family would like to express our sincere appreciation to Ethel Hart of Alachua. She provided years of loving care for both Mabel and Ellis. Ellis will be sorely missed. He was an extraordinary man who led a life of hard work and accomplishment. Funeral services will be conducted at 10:30 A.M., Sat., Oct. 22nd at Santa Fe Baptist Church, 7505 NW County Rd. 236, Alachua, Fl. Visitation will be Fri., Oct. 21st, 5-7 P.M. at Evans-Carter Funeral Home, 220 N. Main, High Springs, Fl. (386-454-2444). Interment will be at 2:30 P.M., Sat., Oct. 22nd, at Evergreen Cemetery, Jacksonville, Fl. (Use East 44th Street Gate at Cemetery). Please Sign the Guestbook @ Jacksonville.com

Bert:

Just learned of your Dad's passing. He was always kind and certainly an icon in the parts business. I was also sorry to hear about your Mom's passing, as well! She too was a kind person. Both your Mom & Dad will always be remembered, fondly.

Only today did I hear of Ellis's passing. My belated but sincere condolences to the Hitzing family. I guess I knew Ellis since about 1962 (?, when I was 14) and, I always liked him.

Bert and Wade,

We were sad to hear about your Dad's passing. Uncle Louis(Donaroma) and I(Jensine Husband Henderson)was talking about living on "The Hill" and going to the Grocery Store and Gas Station. I remember some great times with your Dad and how he would tease me and pretend he "got my nose". It's amazing how from something sad, good things can be recalled.

Uncle Louis and I send our regrets and our thoughts are with you. Take care and God Bless

Bert & Family, I was so sorry to hear of your Dad's passing. He was one of the finest men I have ever met.. He was the true meaing of the Greatest Generation. He was the first cold call, I ever made in the automotive aftermarket. He forgot more about the business than most of us will ever know. He will surely be missed. My prayers and thoughts are with your family. Jim O'Hara Wix Filtration

I have heard Ellis and Mabel Hitzing spoken of all of my life. My grandmother Georgia Sellers spoke of working in Ellis' grocery story. My mother speaks with great honor and respect of the quality of this man and his wife who lived and worked in the neighborhood where she grew up. Praise God for the life this man lived and the people he touched.

Bert, I heard the sad news about your Father, yet in a way it wasn't. Your Father was the kind of man that made this country great. A hard working, honest man that left a great legacy for his family. He left this world the way he and a lot us would have wanted. Like the Enegizer Bunny. Still GOING-GOING-GOING at 97. Your friend, Kevin White

The Hitzing family is in my prayers. I have known Mr. Ellis since I was about 7-8 years old, and I have lived at the ranch across the dirveway from him for the past 4 years. I have always loved working on the ranch and helping out. Over the past few years, I have always enjoyed taking supper or desserts over and chatting with him. He always had the most interesting stories about his life. I will miss having him around, and will treasure all the memories I have of him.

My Uncle Ellis was a unique and extraordinary man and there will never be another like him. He was a man known for his ability to put the needs of others before his own and throughout his life relied only on his own abilities. He was truly a self made man. Ellis Hitzing never sought praise or recognition for his charitable contributions or willingness to help a friend in need. I will always remember him and my Aunt Mabel.

I went to church with Ellis. I was told to call him and his wife Mr. or Mrs. Hitzing. But one sunday when they came in the church I said good morning Mr. and Mrs. Hitzing. That is when they stopped me and told me to call them Ellis and Mabel. that Mr. and Mrs. were for old people and they were not old. My heart is in sorrow for his passing but also jouyful to kn ow that he is in heaven with our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. he will truly be missed here on earth. I know that one day I will see him and his wife again in heaven. May God send his comforting Angel down and be with his family during this time.

To our beloved Bert & ALL family members, we mourn with you at this time. Mr. Hitzing will always be a part of our memories--especially through the 1960's. Words cannot describe what an extraordinary person he was and we cannot express the influence he had on us as "The McClain Family". Even my son, feels that he knows the legacy of "EWH". All day Monday & Tuesday, Mr. Hitzing was on my mind, even before I was notified. Take care and peace be with with, "LIZ", Elsie (McClain) Charlie Jenkins AND E.H. (the cat)
