Landon Williams Obituary

REV. DR. LANDON L. WILLIAMS, SR.
Pastor, Leader, Philanthropist, Humanitarian, Activist and Author are words synonymous with Dr. Landon L. Williams, Sr. As an underprivileged youth, raised during the Great Depression, Dr. Williams watched his Mother attempt to care for him and his twin brother. The already bleak period pf the Great Depression coupled with the meager earnings from his mother's income would be his encouragement to become employed. He started as a laborer and eventually, he was named as the youngest President of the International Longshoremen Association (local 1408/1408A) (1960-1983). Additionally, he was voted as Vice President of the Longshoremen's Association, AFL-CIO (from 1972-1983) and he served as the Regional Vice President of the South Atlantic & Gulf Coast District. Dr. Williams not only provided jobs to minorities who would otherwise be marginalized during tenure, but he also completed contract negotiations that brought the men of the Union, over one-hundred million dollars, while assisting to make Jacksonville, Florida a Port of prominence. Discrimination in the health care system had a direct negative impact on the health and wellbeing of many Blacks in Duval County. Dr. Williams reflects on a time where medical treatment for Blacks would not be granted by Duval Medical Center unless it was after 5:00p.m. The imagery of the building taunted Dr. Williams and he vowed: if he was ever in a position to help those that were misfortunate (referencing their health care), he would do so. In 2004, Dr. Williams opened Agape Community Health Centers. Agape Center offers comprehensive affordable primary Health care services which include Dental, Behavioral Health and Educational Services to those needing financial assistance as well as those who are insured. Dr. Williams pastored for over fifty years and was a spiritual adviser for many, including U.S. Senators, Mayors, and layperson of the faith. At his passing, he serves as the Pastor of Greater Macedonia Baptist Church, where he has Pastored since 1976. Under his leadership, the church partnered with the "Picerne Development Company" to build a 120-unit Apartment Complex for Senior citizens which is formerly named "Rosalind Villas" commemorative to his late wife. Previously, Dr. Williams was recognized by multiple Civil, Labor and National groups but, he felt that the greatest award which could ever be afforded to him, was his reflection that his living has made someone's life better. Dr. Williams was preceded in death by his wife the late Rosalind Priscilla Boglin Williams. Also, Dr. Williams is a father of five children: Yolanda, Reginald (Lorraine), Lanita (Elijah), Michell and Landon, Jr., as well as a grandfather to Reginald, Jr., Nahshon, Lonnie, Justin-Isaiah, Lauren, Landon, Zachariah, Rezell, Trey, Justin and a host of great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, church family, fraternity and ILA brothers and sisters. Funeral Service will be held Saturday at 11:00am at his church, Greater Macedonia Baptist Church of Northside. A Wake Service will be held on Friday at his church from 6-8pm. Entombment in Restlawn Memorial Park Cemetery. Arrangements by: JAMES GRAHAM MORTUARY, INC. 3631 MONCRIEF ROAD.

And His NAME, Through Faith in His NAME, the Faith, by Him, hath given Him, this "PERFECT SOUNDNESS" in the presence of you all, excerpt from the ACTS OF THE APOSTLES, THE HOLY BIBLE, KJV. Rev. Will A. Waldrop, Sr., was just an Usher at our church, St. Matthew Baptist, Rev. George A. Price, Pastor, when his United States Navy Active Duties required him to relocate to one of three, United States Navy installations in Jacksonville, Fl, and after a call from the Lord to preach the gospel as a full time minister, after church, many times, my dad, Rev. Will A. Waldrop, Sr., my mother, and myself, drove in nearby neighborhoods and admired the beautiful homes in the area, one of the homes belonged to a prominent businessman and his family, who was known for having one of the most beautiful homes in our city. We drove near Mr. Landon Williams home many "Sunday" afternoons, when one day, a childhood friend invited me to go bike riding with her, I agreed, as we traveled a street that was near to my home, then a block that lead near that beautiful home, we often drove slowly past, and then, the ACTUAL STREET the home was on and THEN the SAME "DRIVEWAY" until, her bike wheels and then mine, turned into THE VERY DRIVEWAY, of the family, I only knew as the people, with that beautiful home I, wish ours was as big as, when the friend parked her bike and walked up to their DOOR, I almost FAINTED, then as she began to notice how SHOCKED I was, she explained This was her GODMOTHER house, the door unlocked, her GODMOTHER invited us in, and this was the manner I was introduced to one of Northside Jacksonville, Florida's most successful businessmen, who also became Pastor of one of the most visited Baptist Churches in our city, and whose musician was, accomplished Teacher, Director and Pianist, Mr.Virdell Jakes, Jesus said, "Where I'm going you know and the way you know", His Disciple said, "Lord we don't know where you're going, how can we know the way?" Jesus replied, "I am the way, the truth and the life," may you be able to explore and find a devoted Father, Pastor, Husband, Business and Activist Leader as Landon Williams demonstrated with his lifestyle instead of just with the mere words of the mediocre:

I asked Mr Wiiliams for a job (this was over 30yrs ago.) I wanted to work the docks and make big money like the men. He told me no however I can get you an office job. Back then there no women on the docks. I think look at those docks now. He was an awesome person He did offer me a job. This motivated me to go back to college. Thx Mr. Williams

Thank you for being a spiritual leader to my family. It was great how you took to both of my sons as they were growing up. After church, we loved talking to you because no matter how many people were in the church, you made time to always talk and say how big the boys were growing. RIH Pastor Williams.

May the love of God be with you during this time. Dr. Williams was a great man who cared about everybody! During many of his presentations, Dr. Williams would talk about the goodness of God! He was an acquaintance of my Father, the late Sr. Bishop Albert Hill, D.D. Dr. Williams shared some memories with me that I really appreciated. My prayers are with the family!!

I truly would not have enough space to say all that I wold love to say and share. But, I will say this much. Pastor Landon Williams was a very good and, caring person. I met him through my father, they were very, very, close friends and, my father was also a past member of Greater Macedonia. The late, Mr.Elijah Thomas Jr. Also, known by most longshoremen, as UNCLE BUCK! I would like to extend my condolences to Yolanda and family, from the Thomas- Corner family. May the good Lord up above continue to Bless you all as the days come and go and, may the family know, from all that knew, and cared for Pastor Williams, that he was a great person that will always be remembered, for all that he did and shared with the community of those less fortunate. May GOD forever Bless his loving soul until we all meet again on the other side. Yolanda and family, STAY STRONG, AS SO WAS YOUR FATHER.
