Bernard R. "Bernie" Smith

1949 - 2025

Bernard R. "Bernie" Smith, 76, of Wellsboro, passed away on Friday, October 31, 2025, at Broad Acres Health and Rehab, Wellsboro. He was born on October 9, 1949, in Blossburg, son of the late Clarence and Anna (Hughes) Smith. He married the former Betty Putman on July 7, 1968, and celebrated over 57 years together.
Bernie graduated from Wellsboro High School, Class of 1968 and worked at Ingersol-Rand, later Dresser-Rand. After he retired, he owned and operated Bernie's Auto Repair, he loved working on cars and had his own race car. Bernie liked eating out at different restaurants and meeting new people, night fishing, watching NASCAR races, westerns, and the Three Stooges.
In addition to his wife Betty, Bernie is survived by a daughter, Julie (Art) Berger of Manchester; sons: Jeff (Stacy) Smith and Jon Smith, both of Wellsboro; brothers: Gene Smith of Wellsboro; Tom (Bonnie) Smith of Mansfield; grandchildren: Zach, Zoey and Keira, sisters-in-law: Katie Smith and Rosie (Gene) Heck, brother-in-law, Tom Putman, and several nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews.
In addition to his parents, Bernie was preceded in death by brothers: LeRoy, Ronnie and his wife Mildred, Richard, Walter, and Rickey, a sister, Nancy and Tom Starkweather, niece and nephews: Janet, Rocky, and Bobby, brother-in-law, Robert Putman, sister-in-law, Peggy Putman Davis, and his four-legged buddies: Sadie and Chewie.
Family and friends are invited to pay their respects, Saturday, November 8, from 12-1 p.m. at the Tussey-Mosher Funeral Home, 139 Main St., Wellsboro, PA 16901.
