GLADYS S. PIELL

1926 - 2023

Gladys S. Piell, 96, of Wellsboro, joined her husband, Newton Piell, in heaven on Friday, February 17, 2023. They had celebrated 55 years of marriage together prior to his passing in 2000.
Born September 30, 1926, near Frenchtown, N.J., she was one of two children born to the late James and Johanna Naber Smith. Gladys was preceded in death by her brother, Fred Smith in 2010.
Gladys had a true passion for music and played and taught piano for several years. She was a church member, organist, and choir director at the Baptistown Baptist Church in Baptistown, N.J. Gladys and Newton enjoyed traveling, especially camping trips, for many years. The most adventurous camping trip was driving the Alcan Highway in 1974 to visit their daughter, Christine, in Fairbanks, Alaska.
Following Newton's death, Gladys moved to Mansfield to be near family. There, she attended church services at the Wellsboro Baptist Church and the Bakerburg Community Church, where she assisted with the music program.
Her remaining family includes daughters, Nancy Stettler (Steve), of Mansfield and Christine Smellow (Sam, deceased), of Bainbridge Island, Wash.; grandsons, Steve (Michelle) and Brad (Denise) Stettler; great-grandchildren, Tyler (Jamie), Nathan (Vivienne), Isaac (Rebekah), Ethan, and Karis Stettler; and great-great-grandchildren, Sophia Stettler, Luke Kemp, Landon Stettler, Mackinley Stettler, Maverick Stettler, Kyle Anthony, and RaeLynne Anthony.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made in Gladys' name to the Tioga County Homeless Initiative, 2580 Charleston Rd., Mansfield, PA 16933.
Gladys will be laid to rest next to her husband in the Rosemont Cemetery in New Jersey. A virtual memorial service will be held sometime in March. For info, contact: Christine (Chris) Smellow at csmellow2002@yahoo.com.
