Edward Joseph Finney Jr.

Edward Joseph Finney Jr., 96, of Lehighton, passed into eternal rest on Thursday, Jan. 11, 2024, in his residence. He was the husband of Grace H. (Ouly) Finney. They were married for 74 years in February 2023.

Prior to retiring, he was employed by Conrail, and previously had worked for the Lehigh Valley Railroad, Bethlehem Steel Corporation and the Jersey Central Railroad.

A man of many trades, he also worked as a carpenter and bricklayer, and tended bar at the former Carbon House, Lehighton, and the Lehigh Fire Company No. 1, Lehighton.

Born in Lehighton on Thursday, April 21, 1927, he was a son of the late Edward Joseph Sr. and Mary (Hager) Finney.

He served our country with the U.S. Navy during World War II, having attained the rank of Seaman 2nd Class in the European Theater of Operations while serving aboard the USS Laub, Nields and Young.

Ed was an active member of SS. Peter and Paul Roman Catholic Church, Lehighton, where he previously was an altar server and parish usher.

He held life memberships with the Beaver Run Rod & Gun Club and Lehigh Fire Company No. 1.

Surviving in addition to his widow are two sons, Edward James, and his wife, Linda, of East Penn Township, and Richard T., and his wife, Cindy, of Lehighton; four grandchildren, Christopher, Sheila, Michele and Melissa; three great-grandchildren, Jeremy, Max and Brody; and nieces and nephews.

He was also predeceased by two sisters, Eleanor Focht and Margaret Vathis; and a brother James.

Service: Mass of Christian Burial 11 a.m. Friday, Jan. 19, SS. Peter and Paul Roman Catholic Church, Third and Coal streets, Lehighton, with the Rev. Christopher M. Zelonis officiating, assisted by Deacon Joseph C. Wilhelm Jr. Call 10-11 a.m. Friday in the church. Military graveside service, parish cemetery, N. Fourth St., Lehighton, under direction of Lehighton Area UVO. Call 10-11 a.m. Friday in the church. Arrangements by Andrew P. Ovsak Funeral Home, Lehighton. Contributions in his name may be made to the church, 18235. Online condolences can be offered at www.ovsakfh.com.
