George B. Sassaman, 94, of Abbott Street, Lansford, passed away on Wednesday, June 6, 2018, in the Kutztown Manor Nursing Home, Kutztown. He was the husband of the late Carmella R. (Dignazio) Sassaman, who died on Feb. 25, 2015.
He worked with his grandfather as a plasterer for many years in the Panther Valley and then in the Lehigh Valley. Upon retiring, he worked for Vanek Security at the former Coaldale State General Hospital. Born on Saturday, May 3, 1924, in Lansford, he was a son of the late Joseph E. and Dorothy E. (Bolles) Sassaman.
A graduate of the former Lansford High School, he served honorably with valor in the U.S. Army during World War II. He was awarded a Purple Heart Medal for having fought in the Battle of the Bulge.
Surviving are a daughter, Renee L. Mantz; two grand-daughters, Megan L., wife of David Pielmeier, and Lauren R., wife of Timothy DeTurk; two great-granddaughters, Claire Pielmeier and Abigail DeTurk; a brother-in-law, George "Bucky" Brimmer Jr.; a niece, Gwyneth A. Collevechio; and a nephew, George W. Brimmer III, and his wife, Liz.
He was also preceded in death by a son-in-law, Gary Mantz; and a sister, Mary Alice Brimmer.
Service: Funeral service 1 p.m. Monday, June 11, E. Franklin Griffiths Funeral Home and Cremation Services, 655 E. Broad St., Tamaqua, with the Rev. Dr. Wayne Benack officiating.
