Walter Sutton Obituary
Sutton
Walter Leander Sutton, 90, died on Feb. 5. He lived with his wife, Regina, in the Mirage Development, Barnegat, N.J., and had suffered from Parkinson's Disease for the past six years.
Born in Brooklyn, N.Y., he attended Brooklyn Prep High School and joined the Navy in 1943.
He served on detached service as a radioman for the OSS in Europe, India, China and Australia.
The deceased became a New York City fireman in 1951 and retired as a captain in 1976. He then started his second career in teaching, and. following graduation from the College of Staten Island, he and Regina taught at the St. Clare's Grammar School, Staten Island, and St. Joseph Grammar School, Jim Thorpe, after their move to Bear Creek Lake. Following their retirement from teaching, the moved to Barnegat in 2003.
Surviving in addition to his wife of 65 years are a daughter Regina, wife of Robert Emmett Sibley; four grandchildren, Emily, wife of Ivar Johnson, Robert Emmett Sibley III, Christopher James Sibley and Thomas John Sibley; two great-grandchildren, Jonas and Lucy Johnson; and a brother, George Sutton of Staten Island.
Service: Memorial gathering 9-11 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 11, Bugbee-Riggs Funeral Home, 335 S. Main St. (Rt. 9), Barnegat. Funeral Liturgy will follow at 11:30 a.m. in St. Mary Catholic Church, 859 West Bay Ave., Barnegat. In lieu of flowers, contributions in his name may be made to the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson's Research, c/o Kober for the Cure, 260 Gates Ave., Gillette, N.J. 07933.

He was my 7th grade teacher at St. Clare's school in Staten Island and was part of a positive turning point in my life (sounds a little dramatic but ... it's true). To this day I ALWAYS remember the way he presented one particular english grammar lesson whenever I'm writing. He had also worked with my dad in the fire department, and my dad spoke very highly of him. Great man and a strong, positive influence on me -- very, very sorry for your loss, Mrs. Sutton.

I'm so sorry for your loss. I have many happy memories of days on Beach Road and Mr. Sutton was a big contributor.
