Allan Miller Obituary

Dr. Allan Miller

Dr. Allan Miller was born on July 4, 1935 to Jen and Simon Miller in Windsor, Ontario, and passed on January 28, 2022. At the age of two, his family moved to Toledo where he graduated from Scott High School and the University of Toledo. He then went on to earn his doctorate in Osteopathic Medicine from Kansas City University in 1961. After brief stints in Seattle, WA and Flint, MI, Allan opened his medical practice in Toledo in 1964. Allan met the love of his life, Ilene Rosenberg while he was at the University of Toledo and they married in 1962. Their wonderful marriage and partnership is an inspiration to all who knew them.

They have three children, Denise Horwitz (Steve), Stacie Newmark (Jeff) and Dr. Josh Miller (Dr. Jill). Allan and Ilene always put family first and they instilled this in their children and grandchildren.

Allan was greatly impacted by his time as a Boy Scout and Eagle Scout. Allan valued community and gave much of his time and talents to various organizations. He was Chief of Staff at Parkview Hospital, President of the National Osteopathic Proctology Association, Dean of Students at Ohio University Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine, Vice-President of the local AMA chapter, and mentor to hundreds of osteopathic medical students, many of whom he was still in contact with.

Allan participated in all aspects of Temple Shomer Emunim, including serving as President and Treasurer. He was also a member of the Jewish Federation of Greater Toledo Board, the Toledo Board of Jewish Education and many other Jewish organizations. Allan was a life-long bridge player, a relaxed golfer, a lover of Tai Chi, and a runner before it was fashionable. After retirement, Allan gave even more of himself to the community by tutoring elementary school students in the Toledo Public Schools through Mentors in Education.

Allan lived his life with kindness, humility, high ethical standards and respect for all human beings. Everyone who met him loved him.

Allan is survived by his wife of almost 60 years, Ilene; his children and his grandchildren, Dr. Amy Horwitz, Jessica Horwitz, Molly Newmark and Maddie, Jack and Sydney Miller. He is also survived by his brothers, Michael Miller (Jane) of San Francisco and Ronald Miller (Nedra) of Houston, Texas; along with many loving nieces and nephews.

Our many thanks to Dr. Mohammad Rashid and the amazing staff at the Toledo Clinic Cancer Center and to Dr. Kristin Woodard for her wonderful care. Special thanks to everyone at Sincera and Hospice of Northwest Ohio for their kind and compassionate care and support of our family.

Funeral service will be at Temple Shomer Emunim on Tuesday, February 1 at 11 a.m. Please note that masks and proof of up-to-date vaccinations will be required to attend the service. Our condolences and hugs to Ilene and family. Dr. Miller was an accomplished professional, a friend to many, a leader in the community, and a good man, who raised, with Ilene, a wonderful family. May his memory be a blessing.

Kathie and I met Alan at Temple Shomer Emunim, and got to know him while we were all tutoring elementary students together. Alan never told us that he was ever a doctor. While we knew that he had once been the President of Shomer, he never spoke of it. He never even mentioned that Denise Horwitz, who also became a President of Shomer, was his daughter! He always had a smile whenever he saw us. He always treated us as if we were the most important people he ever met. That summarizes Alan. In the truest sense of the word, Alan Miller was a mensch! We will miss him, as will everyone who ever knew Alan.

Dr. Miller had infectious smile and laugh. I spent 20+ years assisting him during colonoscopy at St Luke's and loved his outlook.

Allen was my cousin and I last saw him a few years ago when he was going to drive to Windsor, take me to dinner, and then drive me to the airport. He would go out of his way for me a lot. I will miss him dearly, but I still have lovely memories of him visiting Windsor with his brothers when we were very young. He was also a Master of Tai Chi and that focus along with his kindness made him a wonderful person to know and love.
