Arunkumar Patel Obituary

Dr. Arunkumar F. Patel, respected psychiatrist, passed away April 17, 2006, at the University of Michigan Hospital.
Dr. Patel was born in Surat, India, on October 12, 1943. He developed an interest in medicine at an early age by observing his father, Dr. Fakirbahai Patel. He was greatly influenced by the simplicity and devotional nature of his mother, Sitaben Patel. He was greatly influenced by his parents' deep love for the family and the community. Their generosity towards the less fortunate helped mold Dr. Patel's personality. "Dr. Patel was a gentleman, a man of gentle nature and kindness. His enduring commitment to his patients, his professionalism, leadership and friendship will be deeply missed by all of us", said Frank Ayers, retired CEO of the Rescue Mental Health Services.
He attended Mahatma Gandhi Medical College in Jamshedpur, India and graduated with M.B.B.S. degree in 1969. He practiced medicine in India for 6 years. Dr. Patel arrived in the United States in 1975. He completed his residency in Psychiatry at the Medical College of Ohio and earned his Board Certification in 1979. In addition to being Board Certified in general Psychiatry, he is also Board Certified in Geriatric Psychiatry and Addiction Psychiatry. He is a fellow of the American Psychiatric Association.
Dr. Patel has been in private practice since 1979. He has been actively involved in teaching the residents and medical students at the Medical College of Ohio and Lake Erie Osteopathic School of Medicine. He felt that education is the most important tool in communicating with his patients and students. "Toledo Psychiatric Community has lost a great leader" said Dr. Pratap Torsekar, Medical Director, Harbor Behavioral Health Center. "I was privileged to be associated with Dr. Patel since 1976. He excelled not only as a clinician but proved to be the most dependable colleague and a great friend."
Dr. Patel served as a Delegate of the Ohio Psychiatric Association and as the Medical Director of both the Rescue Crisis Mental Health Services and of the Psychiatric and Behavioral Services of St. Charles Mercy Hospital. He has served as a consultant for the Unison Center. He has also served on the Board of Trustees for both the Alliance of the Mentally Ill of Toledo and the Depression and Manic Depression Association. Dr. Patel also served the severely mentally ill underprivileged population of Toledo. He has been recognized for his leadership in starting the free mental health clinic for the homeless.
Dr. Patel has been recognized as the Provider of the Year by the Alliance for the Mentally Ill of the Toledo in 1995. His recognition as an Exemplary Psychiatrist for the National Alliance for the Mentally Ill in 1996 came as no surprise to all of his colleagues. His dedication to the field of education was recognized when he was awarded the Teaching Preceptor of the Year in 1997 by the Lake Erie Osteopathic School of Medicine. In 2001, he received the Lifetime Achievement Award for the DMDA. In addition to his services in the field of psychiatry, he donated his time and services to the International Institute. He was recognized for his contributions to the Institute in 2000 when he was awarded the Distinguished Citizen Award. He also served as a Chairman of the Board of Trustees for the Hindu Temple of Toledo. "He was the most dedicated professional and always did what was best for his patients. From the beginning he was my mentor and best friend and most wonderful colleague" said Dr. Kulbhushan Gupta.
He is survived by his loving wife, Hema Patel; daughters, Dr. Jesal A. Patel (Dr. Shawn A. Dornhecker) and Dr. Toral A. Patel; granddaughter, Sia A. Dornhecker and brother, Dr. Jitendra Patel.

Dr. Patel was a wonderful friend. I had the pleasure of working with him at Riverside Hospital's Outpatient Geriatric/Psych Unit several years ago. He was one of the best Doctors I have ever worked with. A true man and friend I will never forget. He had cared for a family friend for years and gave him a balance to his life. I know that Dr. Patel will be missed in the Toledo community. May peace be with his family.

My deepest sympathy to the Patel Family. He has been my Doctor for 13

years. His gentelness, and understanding are unlike any I have ever seen in a Physician. He was my friend, and truly helped save my life. I will really really miss him.

The world of Mental Health has taken a serious set back. He has been there for the clients and the staff who work with them either in Crisis mode or on-going casemanagement. He was someone I looked up to for inspiration and knowledge when I worked with the Zepf Center and Rescue Mental Health Center. He was an Honorable and Dedicated man who made a difference in the lives of the Mentally Ill and with service providers. My heartfelt condolences for his family. I greive your lost.

Dr. Patel was one of the few who understood and could treat the struggles we faced every day. I would like to thank him for all of his care and concern and always being there when I needed him. If only more doctors cared half as much as he did about their patients, this world would be a better place. I feel very honored and priviliged to have been one of his patients and will miss him greatly. We will remember you always, Lisa and David

May God take Dr. Patel in His loving Hands & grant this good man eternal life just as Dr. Patel gave life back to my sister who suffered through deep depression. In gratitude and sympathy.

I have been fortunate enough to work with Dr. Patel for a little over a year at my employment at Flower Hospital. He has been my mentor and is the reason that I have chosed to go to medical school and follow in his footsteps. His compassion for others and his passion in his work have shown me that I am truly in the best field of work. I will always remember running to the door to open it for him whenever he buzzed, not once but twice, I was always very excited to see him. I will always hold onto everything he has taught me and keep his belief in me in mind as I go on to medical school. When I graduate I know that he will be beside me. Dr. Patel, thank you for so much, you've helped me more than you will ever know. You will truly be missed.

Please accept my condolences to the family of Dr. Patel. My life is so empty now without my savior, Dr. Patel. Dr. Patel gave me my life back six years ago, I thought I was doomed but he told me I had a chemical imbalance, medicine and his kind, kind gentle way made me whole again. I moved to Florida a short time after and pray everyday for that man of kindness and know he is with his God. I will forever be touched and thankful to have known Dr. Patel and to have been in his presence, he could heal with a look. Sometimes in life we are blessed to have met a person of his greatness. May he rest in peace with his loving God. I have been thinking of him for the last week and must have know he needed prayers, I prayed for him.
