Bernard Sanchez Obituary

(News Article) Bernard R. Sanchez, a musician, teacher, and conductor who had extended runs as principal trumpet of the Toledo Symphony; chairman of music at the University of Toledo, and president of the Toledo Federation of Musicians, died Monday in Lakes of Monclova senior community. He was 78.

He had congestive heart failure, said his wife, Rita.

One of Mr. Sanchez's last engagements was as conductor of music for an Advent Vesper service at Monroe Street United Methodist Church in 2011. He was a member of the congregation and, for 14 years, he conducted annual Palm Sunday concerts of large choral works not often performed in concert halls or churches, though composed by the likes of Beethoven and Verdi. He selected the music each year and led weeks of rehearsals.

"He felt a calling after that first performance," his wife said. "He wanted to do something to keep that church on the map, because it was known for its music, and he wanted to give something to the community it had not experienced in a long time."

Mr. Sanchez joined the Toledo Symphony in 1960 as principal trumpet at the invitation of Conductor Joseph Hawthorne. He also played with the Toledo Opera Orchestra and performed in settings varying from orchestral to chamber.

His was "a unique sound. His trumpet had a vocal quality to it," said David Jex, a UT music professor who took trumpet lessons from Mr. Sanchez as a high school student and who played with him in the faculty brass quintet. "All the other trumpet players would know if Bernie was playing in the orchestra. It had the lyrical quality that was hard to match."

Mr. Sanchez of Oregon taught music at Robinson Junior High School in Toledo and at McCord Junior High School in the Sylvania system. He started his UT career in 1963 as a part-time instructor.

He became a professor of music and was chairman of the university's music department from 1976 to 1993, during which master's degrees were added in music performance and music education.

"He's been so influential, and made so many contributions in so many ways," said Frances Renzi, a pianist and friend. "I worked with him so many times. It was always a pleasure and a privilege."

Mr. Sanchez also was a former president of the local musicians' union.

"He was a strong person and a born leader," his wife said.

He was born Sept. 18, 1935, in New Orleans to Ione and William Sanchez. He played in his high school band and continued to study music at Louisiana State University and then the University of Louisville, where he received a bachelor's degree in music education and master's degrees in music and conducting. He took a job running a hospital's morgue elevator in order to study with the principal trumpet of the Philadelphia Orchestra.

"He was one of those people who was just determined that this was what he wanted to do," his wife said. "It was his heart and soul."

He was an Army veteran and served stateside.

He and his wife were introduced by Sam Szor, longtime conductor for Music Under the Stars at the Toledo Zoo. Mr. Sanchez played trumpet in the band; Rita Cullinan, a soprano, was a guest artist. They married June 29, 1962.

Surviving are his wife, Rita Sanchez; daughters, Robin Vasaturo and Dawn Duncan; sister, Emelda Leathem, and four grandchildren.

Services will begin at 11 a.m. Oct. 26 in Monroe Street United Methodist Church, with visitation starting an hour earlier. The Eggleston Meinert & Pavley Funeral Home is handling arrangements.

The family suggests tributes to Monroe Street United Methodist Church.

Mr. Sanchez (Bernie) was a very positive influence in my life in 1976 and 1977. I had a taste of the college life under his baton and he was the only one who took the time to mentor me in making an important life decision. I remember him as being passionate about music and we all respected him as a conductor and he brought out the best in all of us. Continued prayers and support to the family and friends of Mr. Sanchez.

Bernie was a wonderful teacher, administrator and friend. He was a gifted musician who brought out the very best in his students. The relationships that Bernie developed will forever remain a powerful and enduring legacy. May thoughts of Bernie's professional achievement, devotion to teaching and love of family assuage your grief, leaving only his shining star of triumph as a remembrance.

Dear Rita, Robin and Dawn,
I'm so terribly sorry to hear of Bernie's passing. Countless wonderful memories of him, and of all of you, have been running through my head over the last few days. And the memories are so rich and varied - from working on operas to playing under him in the JCC and UT orchestras, from hilarious joint family vacations to the simple joys of day-to-day friendship. May your own special memories bring you comfort and help you through this difficult time. Sending you all my love.

Rita,
On behalf of the Board of Directors of Otterbein Portage Valley Homes, I offer our sincere condolence. Bernie was a definite asset to many organizations and we were fortunate enough to be one of them.
It was so nice seeing both of you at a recent board meeting when Bernie was given special recognition for his many years of service.

Rita and family, my great days with Bernie primarily go back many years ago. During my many years in the 555th AF Band we were so fortunate to have him as an Airman, solid trumpet player and also our assistant conductor. When our commander left the unit again Bernie stepped in to lead the band. One thing I do recall was during this time he worked with each of us in an effort to bring out the best of each of us and left the band that had jumped up a couple levels in performance. Bernie, Rest In Piece.

Bernie was the most influential musician and teacher i encountered in my career. Bernie's warm personality and friendly demeanor was what lead me to choose to attend the University of Toledo back in 1972. Like Jim Depth, Bernie also helped me go on to study with his teacher Leon Rapier.

I was fortunate enough to have a more than 40 year relationship, both professional and personal with Bernie. Although it is too numerous to list all the things I learned from him, it all started with musicianship. His trumpet sound was clearly unique and special. It was a sound to be emulated. His strength of will on the podium and ability to inspire musicians to great performances has inspired my conducting career. His ability to bring his vision of compassionate leadership to his administrative job helped prepair me for my administrative career.

Thank you Bernie for the many years of friendship and support. Rita, I look forward to many more years of friendship. May God bless you and bring you his peace.

Rita and Family,
I want to express my sincere sympathy for the passing of Bernie. He was such an influence on so many in the music world and those that were the recipients of his great talent. Mary Anderson is now accompanying him in the heavenly choirs. It is always too soon to let go of our loved ones, but it is our faith that comforts us. He made a difference!

We knew about Mr. Sanchez from my sister, Peg Kendall. She loved the music at Monroe St. UMC, and Sunday evenings when we would talk, she would tell us all about the music and about Rita and Bernie. She must be applauding as they reunite in Heaven. Rev. Bob

My heartfelt condolences to Rita and Bernie's family. I was privileged to have been one of “Mr. Sanchez's” first trumpet students when he came to Toledo and one of the many students with whom he passed on his musical knowledge.

I had auditioned for a Toledo Orchestra scholarship to study with the new principal trumpet in the orchestra…a Mr. Bernard Sanchez. Winning and having the opportunity to study with Bernie introduced me to the art of classical trumpet playing and he was responsible for my decision to pursue a career as professional trumpet player. He took me under his tutelage and developed me as a player. In his quiet way he challenged and encouraged me to excel and supported me in my efforts.

His guidance and recommendation led me to getting a scholarship to the University of Louisville where I studied with his mentor, Leon Rapier. Bernie followed my career and always had a keen interest in what I was doing. When I was in High School he often recommended me to perform with him in area musical events…invaluable experience

One of my fondest memories was playing on the same program with the Toledo Orchestra called a “Mass of Brass”. As winner of the junior soloist with the Toledo Orchestra I performed the Shostakovich Concerto for Piano and Trumpet. He performed the Tomasi Trumpet Concerto and then the off-stage trumpet solo in Respighi's Pines of Rome . His playing was beautiful and flawless…his tone and wonderful vibrato were unmistakable. He was a true artist.

After my professional career began Bernie invited me to come back to Toledo University to give a guest recital. It was an honor to come back and to be able to perform for him and his students.

Bernie's legacy will live on through his students and his memorable performances as a trumpet player and conductor…and for his kind human spirit. He will be sorely missed by all who were fortunate to have been touched by his love of music and his willingness to share and nurture that love with others.

Bernie…Gabrielle's trumpet section will be lucky to have you join them!

Rita,
I'm so sorry for your loss. Bernie was a great musician and leader. He will be missed by many, but know that his passion and legacy live on in the many students he guided through the years. He was instrumental in my journey, I would not have what I do today if it wasn't for his guidance and help at UT.
