Calvin Otto Gerber

Calvin Otto Gerber, age 84, of Bluffton, SC, passed away on April 18, 2022, at Sprenger Health Center.

Mr. Gerber was born on June 4, 1937, to the late Otto Robert Gerber and Nova Mae Lehman Gerber in Wausau, Wisconsin.

Mr. Gerber was a graduate of Heidelberg College in Tiffin, OH, where he received his BA in 1959; United Theological Seminary of the Twin Cities in New Brighton, MN, where he received his BD in 1962; Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, OH, where he received his MA in 1970 and Vanderbilt University Divinity School in Nashville, TN, where he received his D.Min. in 1974.

Mr. Gerber was ordained in 1962 by the United Church of Christ and held the following positions: Faith Community United Church of Christ (Pastor), Toledo, OH (retired in 1999); River East Economic Revitalization Corporation, Toledo, OH (Economic Development Specialist); Memorial United Church of Christ (Pastor), Toledo, OH; First Congregational United Church of Christ (Pastor), Ashtabula, OH; Lakeland College (Campus Minister and Instructor Religion), Sheboygan, Wisconsin and his first church, Salem (now Trinity) United Church of Christ (Pastor), Canal Fulton, OH.

Pastor Gerber's involvements during his career were: Executive Committee, United Church Homes Board of Trustees (senior housing/care); Chair of Finance and Budget, Ohio Conference U.C.C. Board of Trustees; Originator, Director and Bible Teacher of Confirmation Camp (Ohio Conf.); General Synod U.C.C. Delegate four times; Television: co-host, co-producer, writer for "Acorn Alley" (an ecumenical weekly children's religious program); opened an Employment Resource Center at Memorial U.C.C. and State of Ohio Real Estate License with Sulphur Springs Realty, Inc. in Toledo, OH.

Pastor Gerber and his wife, Carolyn, moved to Sun City, Hilton Head in the early 2000's to enjoy the sun and golf. His favorite past time was participating in the Sun City Chorus.

Pastor Gerber is survived by his wife of 32 years, Carolyn Gerber; his children, John (Karen) Gerber of Clyde, OH, Greg (Beth) Gerber of Richfield, OH and Mike (Abby) Gerber of Shelby Township, MI; step-children, Scott (Juli) Kubicki, Sammanish, WA and Shelley Kubicki of IN; grandchildren, Kayla (Mike) Perman, Greta, Maria, David, Anna Margaret and Sam Gerber; and step-grandchildren, Benjamin, Kathryn and Jakob Kubicki; great-grandsons, Calvin and Cameron Perman; his brother, Richard "Dick" Gerber (Jane) of MN; and sister-in-law, Karen Gerber of OH. He was preceded in death by his brother, Paul Gerber.

Memorial service to be held May 21, 2022, 2 p.m. at Memorial U.C.C. in Toledo, Ohio. In lieu of flowers, please consider sending donations in memory of Pastor Gerber to a charity of your choice.

We would like to express our sympathy to the family of Cal. Mark was a classmate of CaL for 7 years, 4 years at Heidelberg College and 3 years at Mission House Theological Seminary. We also attended Cal's wedding to Carol Hernke in 1960. We were roommates for the first year of seminary.

I was a class mate of Cal for 7 years. Four years at Heidelberg College and 3 years at Mission House Theological Seminar. Actually I was a roommate of his one year in seminary. I attended the his wedding to Carol Hernke.

To the Gerber Family. I remember him well for all he did for the Eastside. I had one of the boys in Kdg. at Raymer School. I am 87 and sometimes names escape me. God bless your family. Sandra Kontner aka as Mrs Bitter. taught at Raymer 25 years.
