Carol Mallendick Obituary

(NEWS ARTICLE) Carol C. Mallendick, a onetime Ottawa Hills homemaker and volunteer who founded a trucking and fuel distribution business, died Tuesday in St. Luke's Hospital. She was 64.

Mrs. Mallendick, a Maumee resident, died of complications from an allergic reaction suffered June 17, her son Rob said.

She was corporate secretary of Seaway Fuels Trucking Inc., a fuel distribution business she founded in the early 1990s as C. Mallendick & Sons. Before the name change in the late 1990s, she was president and chief executive officer.

She still worked every day at the firm's South Toledo offices. "She was not just a boss, she was a friend and a mother to the employees," her son said.

Mrs. Mallendick formed the business after her husband's company, Empire Petroleum Inc., went out of business. Her sons had a role, and her husband helped. Each son is a company officer of the renamed Seaway Fuels: Matthew is vice president. Marc is treasurer.

"Technically, I became president," son Rob said. "She was such a strong personality, she still ran most things."

She was far from stern or strict, though.

"She was bubbly, and she always looked for the good in people and situations," son Rob said. "She'd come into a room, and she'd be the person to start all the conversations and get people laughing."

She and Paula Mehring hit it off instantly. Mrs. Mehring's husband, Robert, built the Mallendicks' Ottawa Hills home in the early 1980s. The women met when Mrs. Mallendick stopped by the Mehring home.

"We became friends from the very first day we met. I would call her a friend extraordinaire," Mrs. Mehring said. "She had a way that was so easy to be with."

Mrs. Mallendick was president of the Ottawa Hills Parent-Teacher Organization. She was a member of the Toledo Women's Club and volunteered for the club's charitable projects.

Starting and running a business wasn't much of an adjustment. "Carol was very knowledgeable," Mrs. Mehring said. "She was a fast learner with anything. When she decided to [start a business], it was something that came almost natural to her."

She was born June 24, 1948, in Hillsdale, Mich., to Margaret and Harold Caulkins, who was the police chief. She was a graduate of Hillsdale High School and was a nursing student when she was introduced to Robert Mallendick. They married less than a year later.

Mrs. Mallendick liked to golf and was a member of Brandywine Country Club.

She was a member of the Ohio Contractors Association.

Surviving are her husband, Robert J. Mallendick, Jr., whom she married Dec. 5, 1970; sons, Robert III, Matthew, and Marc Mallendick; brothers, Ron and Dan Salsbury, and six grandchildren.

Visitation is to be today from 3 to 8 p.m. in the Walter Funeral Home. Services are to be Sunday at 3 p.m. in Trinity Lutheran Church, where she was a member.

The family suggests tributes to a charity of the donor's choice.

My condolences to the Mallendick family. Although I never met Carol personally I wanted to take this time and tell you how sorry I am for your loss. I work for a company and have dealt with her for years. She was not only super helpfull work wise but a friend I could talk to personally. Even though I was in a bad accident last year and was careflighted to Dayton. She still went out of her way to call me at home and see how I was doing and the first to call me after I came back to work 4 months later. She was a very caring person. Work wise and personally, I was hoping to make a trip up to see and meet her someday. I just wanted to take this time and tell you how great she was to me and what a great person she was. I wish I had known sooner. I will greatly miss her and think of her everytime I place an order. She touched my soul and may some day we will meet again.

My heartfelt sympathy to Bob,sons and their famlies.
Carol was always thinking about others. She was so kind to me this past year, giving me support for the loss of my Dad. Carol and I go back to kindergarten and grew up just two blocks apart. Our parents were friends. We shared the teenage years and childhood., going to dances, double dating, campfire girls, ballet classes and so much more. She was level headed but so much fun.Carol got the DAR good citizen award her senior year. She was a darling of our class and never forgot her friends. I will hold her in my heart always.

Carol and I are probably the oldest of friends. We were born 12 days apart and along with Trudy, spent our whole lives "growing up" together. My Mother introduced Margaret and Harold Caukins. Carol and I spoke at least twice a year on the phone, my birthday and hers. We spoke on June 12th (my birthday) and my last words to her were, "I'll talk to you next Sunday". I wasn't able to do that. I won't be talking to her again on the phone, but I will keep her close in my heart always. I will miss her. My heart goes out to Bob, Rob, Matt, & Marc and all of Carol's precious grandchildren. I know that she believed in God and she and he are watching over all of you at this very sad time. My Love to you all.

Our family friendship and raising the boys together was a wonderful experience. Carol was a cherished and loyal friend to all of her Inlands Court neighbors. To meet her was to make a lifelong friend. Carol will be sorely missed by all of her family and friends.

Bob & Mallendick family,
Thinking of all you in your time of grief. Carol was a very special person and wonderful member of BWCC.

As time passes by and the sun sets on another day, so seasons change. The world takes on new meaning but one thing remains the same, are your loving memories of Carol.

We will never forget Carol's beautiful smile and the fun that emanated from her at every occasion. She was a magnet who drew people to her. Just being around her improved the quality of every experience. We in the class of '66 salute Carol and extends our deepest sympathies to the family. Kathleen (Scott) and Jim Oliver

Bob and family,
I was saddened to learn of Carol's situation when you called Bob and now to receive your note is very sad. My thought's and prayers are with you all in this time. I will always remember the day we three played golf at Inverness and Carol had the same putter that I was playing with and jokingly I said, it would be nice to have an extra one, well I still have that putter that Carol gave me that day. May you all have God's strength at this time....

Larry and I extend our deepest sympathy to the Malledick Family and to Carol's "Fuel Family" as well. As one of our high school classmates, we became so used to the wonderful smile and the magnetic personality. Her family was her pride and the center of her life. May God grant you all peace and understanding during this difficult time. Here is a poem I wrote and would like to share with all of you:

Time To Come Home

Come home, my child,
Be not afraid.
Come home to the arms
Of I who you made.

Come home, my child,
Into the light,
Out of the darkness
Of that cold night.

You are not leaving
You'll be ever near.
Come home, my child,
Be of no fear.

My arms embrace you
Forever in Peace,
My infinite Kingdom
Does never cease.

Reach to the gentle
Hands from above,
Come home, my child,
To My boundless love.

Mallendick Family and Seaway Fuels,
I will dearly miss Carol. She was my angel. She would take care of me when my co-worker would be on vacation and I filled in for him. If I called to place an order for deisel fuel and spoke to Marc she would call me later to make sure I didn't miss anything. She knew how blonde I am. She would talk to me as if she had known me my whole life. A wonderful lady that will be greatly missed.

To Bob and family: Most of my memories of Carol go back 50+ years to our middle and high school period. During that time Carol was in the middle of everything. She was active in many activities and certainly there was no social event, especially dances that she didn't take part in. She was just full of life and fun loving. We last crossed paths a year ago at a class reunion and I couldn't help but notice she hadn't changed much as she worked that crowd of lifelong friends with lively zeal. Nothing I say can diminish your loss at this time. Rather, I just hope you take some comfort in knowing she was both respected and highly regarded by those who knew her for her entire life.
