Clark Ashley Obituary

ASHLEY Clark C. Clark C. Ashley, born in Toledo, February 18, 1934, to James M. and Ruth Sloan Ashley, passed away April 10, 2008. He served on active duty in the U.S. Navy from 1952-54 and after his honorable discharge attended Northwestern University and University of Toledo. Following a 20+ year sales career with Libbey-Owens-Ford, and in further affiliation with the naval reserves, Clark found his vocation as an alcoholism counselor. A long-time friend of Bill W., he was employed as a counselor at Focus since 2001. His professionalism included extraordinary gifts of empathy and understanding. He was beloved and respected. Clark's interests included enthusiasm for golf, history and baseball. He was an esteemed storyteller with an irrepressible sense of humor and will be greatly missed. Survivors include his daughter, Kristin Ashley, Illinois; siblings, Sally Ashley Dolgenos, New York, James Ashley, Maumee, and Susan Ashley Coss, Toledo; two generations of nieces and nephews; devoted friend, Debra Smigelski, Toledo; countless loving friends, including his former stepchildren. In lieu of flowers, donations can be sent in Clark's name to A.A. Central Office, Toledo. His memorial service, to be held on April 26th at Toledo's Walbridge Park Shelter, starts at 11 a.m., with potluck lunch to follow, beverages provided. My thoughts go out to all of Clarks family and friends who loved him so. He was a wonderful man and co-worker. I worked with Clark from time to time on the weekends. He talk about his daughter and told me his life story. I was so impressed with his wisdom and knowledge. He loved talking about the Civil War. He was a good man and I will always remember him for his ability to connect with all generations.

This man helped me to realize true meaning and purpose in life, and he helped me to position myself so that I could attempt to share the gift that he gave me with other like- minded people in a search for mean and purpose in their lives. Clark continues to live through other's who share his message of hope and love.

when I first came into the program, I always had little money. After the morning meeting, my habit became to go to breakfast with the old guys!! I learned from Clark that oatmeal and toast cost next to nothing. The big plus was sitting back and, listening to his stories and experience. He was a complete joy and I am so grateful for him. March on Clark and, I am right behind you. God Bless
