VANDER HORST

Darla Jean

Darla Jean Vander Horst, born on October 15, 1954, was called home to be with Jesus on April 21, 2013, surrounded by her family. She served as a Lucas County Corrections Officer. She was an amazing woman who showed unconditional love to whomever her path crossed. She will be dearly missed and her spirit will continue to touch all who knew her.

Her pride and joy was her family: husband, Leslie; sister, Laurie and Francisco Gabriel; children, Angela Cairl, Stevan and Erica, Brian and Shannon, Amber and Derrick Saylor; her grandchildren, Robb Cairl, Chaz, Koral, Hope Cairl, Delise, Andrew Saylor, Bentley Saylor, and Devin Curry; nephew, Joaquin Gabriel. She is now resting in heaven with her parents, Stevan and Dorothy Brocus; niece, Violetta Faith Gabriel; grandson, Chase Anthony Saylor, and lifelong friend, Sandra Kunich.

We will be celebrating her life on Thursday, April 25 at Mayfair Church, 5253 Bennett Road from 12:00-2:30 p.m. visitation, memorial service 2:30 p.m. immediately following Life Celebration at Fraternal Order of Police 255 Gradolph St. Toledo, OH 43612 until 8:00 p.m.

Darla was a funny lady but what I most remember about her, she loved her Coloring Books therapy. She was one of the first adults I seen coloring; at first I thought it was odd but watching her and the beauty she created it was a lovely creation. That's when I noticed it was a BIG thing in the adult community. "REST IN HEAVEN" Darla Vander Horst.

My sister was a gift from Heaven. Her life lessons will always be a part of me. Her unconditional love would travel from Ohio to California on a dime. I love you my sissy, so so so so much. As you have impressed my son, and helped make him the man he is, I thank you. For your beautiful children, that I love as if they are mine, and you were so kind to share with me. I will insist on keeping our traditions, even long distance. REST IN PEACE IN YOUR NEW BODY< WITH OUR FATHER GOD IN HEAVEN. Kiss my/your baby Violetta for me.Love your sister Laurie Anne

MOM: I could fill several books with the lessons that you have taught me, As I sit here struggling as to what to say, One thing that I keep coming back to, is, through all the things we have endured in our lives, you have never left my side. Everything good in me I learned from you. I cannot imagine my human life without you. You helped me with everything, whether I wanted it or not. I have no words that can ever describe how you impacted my life. I want to talk to you and make plans for the next time we will see each other, but then I remember I can no longer do that, and it saddens me greatly. I have tried to prepare for goodbye but I will not. So I will say, till I see you again. I know you will continue to watch over us. I will always remember to continue the legacy of the strong family of love that you built. Thank you for always knowing what to say, for showing me a love like no other, for helping me, for understanding, & for doing the best that you could.
That's all I could ever ask. I love you sooo sooo much. You now have the ability to understand how much. Love your daughter Angela

I had the great pleasure of working with Darla for many years. She was always upbeat even through her physical difficulties. Big hearted and kind are just two of her great qualities. She was a social butterfly and kept in contact with those who were her friends. She will be dearly missed. She is smiling down on us no longer in pain. Prayers for family and friends who are grieving her loss.

Dear Darla, My life was enhanced greatly by knowing you. I enjoyed the many Challenge Days that we did together, heping hurting high school students find healing and love. We found some our own healing and connection with others when we did Next Step with many of our Fellowship friends, a day I will never forget. I loved your tremendous sense of humor and your loving, opem, giving heart... Your journey here was sometimes difficult; your physical body caused you many challenges these last few years, but you faced them with courage, grace, and resililence. It makes me smile to know you are now fully restored and in the arms of our Father. Rest now and settle into His embrace and hear Him say, "Well done my beautiful daughter, Welcome HOME" Most Sincerely, Jan O'Mailia
