David Allison Obituary

Dr. David Coulter Allison

Dr. David C. Allison, of Rossford, OH, died peacefully at home surrounded by his family on July 17, 2025, following a period of illness. David was born in Detroit, Michigan, on June 2, 1942, to William Allison and Dorothy Allison (nee Watson). David grew up in Gross Pointe Farms with his parents and younger brothers, Richard Allison (Susan) and Mark Allison (Patti). He received his Medical Doctor degree from University of Michigan and then completed his residency and earned his Ph.D at University of Chicago.

Dave served his country as a Surgeon for the Army Medical Corps Reserve in Vietnam and at Walter Reed Army Hospital in Washington, D.C. Dave met the love of his life, Elizabeth "Betsy" (nee Ward), in Vietnam. They married in September 1970. Dave and Betsy were happily married for almost 55 years until Dave's death.

David and Betsy raised three children, Tiffany Harvey (Christopher Harvey), born in 1973; Beth Allison (Arslan Magomedkhabibov), born in 1975; and Matthew Allison, born in 1977.

David was a surgeon, professor, and academic researcher who touched thousands of lives through his surgical skill, devotion and compassion to his patients, contributions to the field of cellular biology, and mentorship of generations of surgeons.

After completing his residency in Chicago, Dave worked at the University of New Mexico from 1978-1986, then Johns Hopkins Hospital from 1986-1992, and then at the University of Toledo College of Medicine from 1992-2023. He also worked for VA hospitals in Albuquerque, NM; Baltimore, MD; and Fort Wayne, IN, for a total of 20 years.

Dave made time for regular family dinners, outings, and vacations, and his children's and grandchildren's activities. He had many interests including reading, Michigan football and Tigers' baseball, performing and visual arts, pets and history.

David is survived by his wife; children; brothers; sisters-in-law; and five grandchildren, Marc Harvey (26), Isabel Harvey (22), Liam Harvey (19), Kamil Magomedkhabibov (14), and Amalia Harvey (11); three nieces and two nephews; two grand-nieces and five grand-nephews; many dear friends and colleagues; and Fred, the parrot (37). He was predeceased by his parents; and brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Stefan and Frances Schiff.

Visitation will be on Saturday, August 2, 2025, from 2-6 p.m., at the Sujkowski-Walker Funeral Home, located at 830 Lime City Road, Rossford, OH 43460. A short Memorial Service, with time for remarks, will take place starting at 4 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the University of Toledo Medical School in Dave's honor: https://www.utoledo.edu/med/give/
