David Long Obituary

David John Long, 56 years, of Petersburg, MI, died Saturday, August 27, 2005 in St. Anne - Mercy Hospital in Toledo. He was saved by his Lord Jesus Christ and is now safe in the arms of the Lord. He worked for GM Powertrain in Toledo for 31 years, retiring in 1999. The son of Robert and Viola (Van Steenhouse) Long, he was born December 6, 1948 in Saginaw, MI. August 9, 1969, he married Cathleen Rae Claus in St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Temperance. David grew up in Bedford attending Bedford Schools where he graduated in 1967. A varsity athlete for Bedford, he was an all star baseball player, was Bedford's 1st State Wrestling Champion (165 lbs.), and played football. He held many football records at Bedford High School some of which are still standing today. David received a double scholarship to the University of Toledo where he wrestled and played football. He was an avid sportsman and had a passion for fishing. His children and grandchildren were great treasures to him. He was an exceptional husband and he will be missed beyond measure. David loved life and lived every day to the fullest. He was a member of Bedford Alliance Church in Temperance, MI, and UAW Local #14.
He is survived by his loving wife of over 36 years, Cathleen; children, Peggy (Patrick) Darby, David (Laura) Long; brothers, Robert (Barbara) Long, Gary (Cassandra) Long; father, Robert (Shelia) Long and 2 grandchildren, Joshua David Long and Breeanna Rae Long. He was preceded in death by his mother, Viola, April 28, 1991.
Visitation will be Tuesday from 2 till 8 p.m. in the Bedford Funeral Chapel, 8300 Lewis Ave., Temperance, MI. He will lie in state Wednesday from 10 till 11:00 a.m. in the Bedford Alliance Church, Temperance, MI, where funeral services will be held Wednesday at 11:00 a.m. by the pastor, Rev. Robert Hinz, with interment in Whiteford Union Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the church.
