Donald CAMERON Obituary

CAMERON Donald K. Donald K. Cameron, MD, 92, of Sylvania Township, died on Thursday, December 1, 2011, at the Toledo Hospital. Donald was born October 31, 1919, in Toledo, Ohio to Donald E. A. and Edith Kimmel Cameron. He was a 1937 graduate of Scott High School and earned Bachelors' Degrees in both Business and Science from the University of Toledo. He attended The Ohio State University Medical School, graduating in 1949. Dr. Cameron was a Captain in the US Army Medical Corps serving at Ft. Buchanan in San Juan, Puerto Rico from 1955-1957. Donald served as a General Practitioner with Dr. Thad Taylor for many years, retiring from private practice in 1985. Their practice included delivering babies, tonsillectomies, appendectomies, hospital rounds, and house calls seven days a week. Dr. Cameron was also the company physician for Owens-Illinois, General Mills, The Toledo Blade, and other Toledo area companies for many years. In 1982 he established Occupational Health Services at St. Vincent Mercy Medical Center. Dr. Cameron was an "old-school" doctor and a dedicated physician. He loved being a doctor and serving his many generations of patients and their families. If you were to ask one of his patients to describe him, you would hear such words as: dedicated, selfless, warm, kind, gentle, caring and a great sense of humor. He had a way of putting you at ease and could talk to anyone about anything. He treated people like they were friends and carried his signature smile wherever he went. Many of his fellow physicians commented that he was the doctor that they aspired to be. Dr. Cameron was an Eagle Scout and had a lifelong interest in scouting. He organized a Boy Scout Troop at Ft. Buchanan in San Juan and was active at Camp Miakonda. Donald recently received recognition for being the oldest Eagle Scout in the Toledo Area. Donald had a passion for sailing and spent many happy summers at Clark Lake, MI. He was an avid reader and could finish a good mystery in a day or two. His number one interest was his family, he was the consummate family man. Dr. Cameron was a longtime member of First Congregational Church and also of the Downtown Coaches Association. He enjoyed meeting other retired physicians monthly for lunch at Charlie's Restaurant. Donald is survived by his loving wife of 68 years, Lorene Hein Cameron; children, Kendra "Kendy" Pearse (Stephen), Donald H. Cameron (Barbara), and Constance "Connie" Cameron; grandchildren, Stephen C. Pearse, Jeffrey Pearse, Stephanie Cody (Jason), Alison Cameron, Donald Scott Cameron, Alex Tyson, Hannah Tyson; great-grandchildren, Stephen D. Pearse, Makenzie Cody, and Meghan Cody; sister-in-law, Kathleen Cameron, and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, and brother, William K. Cameron. There will be no visitation. Donations in Donald's memory may be made to The Legacy Campaign, Boy Scouts of America-Erie Shores Council, P.O. Box 8728 Toledo, OH 43623. I am one of the children that your husband, father, grandpa had to leave the dinner table for. A lot of house calls were made for me, mostly late nights. I was a very sick little girl but with his knowledge and help and Dr. Taylor´s too, I have survived to 66 yrs old. Thank you for sharing your dad! He is dearly missed.

I always enjoyed seeing Dr. Cameron come through my line at Meijer with your Mom and later finding out my other customers I enjoyed talking to were also his children! Dr. Cameron and I would always talk about medical stuff and I learned his name by running the check through the register! I remember my first time relating him to Marcus Welby MD! He was so sweet as we later grew to talking about my Mom being on dialysis and he never failed to come into Meijer and ask how she was doing! Rest in peace, Dr Cameron, you are singing with the Heavenly angels and in their choir now where there is now more pain or sorrow! Someday we will all be together again, rejoicing in the bliss of our wonderful Savior and eternal life up in His Heaven. My sympathies go to the family during this Christmas season, though you will be missing a special guy and there will be some empty times, rejoice in the memories of the smiles and love you have shared in the past - until we meet again, that will be the strength that carries you through everyday! We sorrow not as others who have no hope!

Dr. Cameron was a fine man with kndness, patience and understanding for all that were fortunate to know him. He was selfless and dedicated to his profession as I remember all the weekends that he was "on call" and couldn't to the cottage at Clark Lake. What a great guy that will be sorely missed.

Kendy & Steve: Our thoughts & prayers are with you in your time of grief. Not only has the medical community lost a truly caring physician but we all have lost an unforgettable man. I have such wonderful memories of our summers spent together at Clark Lake w/your dad & mom and your family.. Those years were priceless. Your dad's obituary is both a tribute to his life and all he accomplished. With the holidays approaching, you will have an empty chair at your table...but know he will always reside in your hearts. Don was one of my mentors during residency. So sorry he is gone from our medical community. He was a giant amongst the finest of people. Not at all surprising he was an Eagle Scout, the quality was evident throughout his life. God bless, may your light shine on through your fine family.

My heartfelt sympathy is extended to the family of Dr. Cameron. I was a patient of Dr. Cameron's for many years, and can still recall the office that he shared with Dr. Taylor on Wallwerth Drive. I remember Dr. Cameron as a soft spoken, caring individual and feel very fortunate to have had him as my family doctor. My thoughts and prayers are with the family during this difficult time.

Dr. Cameron, who was our family and grandfather's doctor along with Dr. Taylor is the physician who recognized my symptoms and told mom to get me to St. Vincents right away, 26 hours after my accident. He recognized that I had a ruptured spleen, and was even able to muster Toledo's greatest surgeon to remove it. Dr. Cameron removed my toncils and also repaired my hernia.
I remember the house visits to check up on the sick ones, and the long hall on Walworth.
Let me offer his family my condolences for this great loss to the family and Toledo.
