He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Dorothy Taucher Hales of Toledo, and two daughters, Deborah Schedel and her husband, William, of Findlay, Ohio and Barbara Layman and her husband, Robert, of Toledo.

Also left to cherish his memory are seven grandchildren, William Schedel and his wife, Stacy; Christopher Schedel and his wife, Amy; Kate Mecja and her husband, Bledi; and Robbie, Kristi, Molly and Andrew Layman, along with four great-grandchildren, Spencer, Darcy, Blaze and Quinn Schedel. Two sisters-in-law, Gwendolyn Hales and Stephanie Plunkett, survive as well.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, William Hales and John "Jack" Hales.

Friends may visit Wednesday evening at the Dawson Funeral Home where the family will be present from 6 to 8 p.m. and one hour prior to the service Thursday. Rev. Dr. Stephen Cramer will conduct a funeral service Thursday at 11 a.m. at the funeral home. Burial will be at Riverview Cemetery where the Tri-State Veterans Burial Group will conduct military honors.
