Gerald Feldstein Obituary

Gerald (Jerry) Feldstein

Gerald (Jerry) Feldstein, 92, passed away on Tuesday, June 11, 2019 at Charter Senior Living of Oak Openings in Sylvania. He was born on August 8, 1926 in Toledo, OH to Jack and Gertrude Feldstein. He graduated from Scott High School in 1944 where he excelled in basketball and was the Sports Editor of the school newspaper.

Jerry served his country for two years in the Navy during WWII protecting American lives as a signalman on the SS John Swett in the Philippines. He revisited these memories when he was chosen to participate in the Honor Flight to Washington, D.C. several years ago.

After the war, he graduated in 1949 from Bentley College in Boston where he majored in Accounting. He then returned to Toledo and began working for his father at General Shoe Findings Company selling shoe supplies. After his father retired, he expanded the business with the help of his sons Howard and Mark to include gift items and renamed it Toledo General Distributors.

Throughout his life, Jerry performed many acts of kindness, albeit in a quiet way, behind the scenes. In addition, he volunteered weekly at The Sight Center, reading stories and newspapers, for those who could not. He was recognized for his kindness with the "Mensch of the Year" Award in 2017 given by the Jewish Neighborhood Organization, "Raggedy Ass Cadets" of which he was a loyal member for many years.

Jerry enjoyed reading, playing golf, and bridge. As a 50-year season ticket holder, he was an avid Toledo Rockets Basketball fan. Most of all, he loved spending time with his family and the love of his life, Corrine Adler.

He is survived by his sister, Rosemarie Surath (Bernard); sons, Howard (Cindy) and Mark (Sandra); daughter, Marla Osgood (Rick); 5 grandchildren (Bailey, Casey, Mason, Brittany and Lauren); 3 great-grandchildren, and nieces, Pam Anderson (Mark) and Dana Gomberg (Larry).

Funeral Services will be held Friday, June 14, at 11:00 am at Temple Shomer Emunim, followed by burial at Woodlawn Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Temple Shomer Emunim or the donor's choice.

The loss of a true mentsch.

June 13, 2019

This message is sent on behalf of the Goodman family, in Toronto. Jerry's Mom Gert (nee Goodman) was raised in Toronto, & moved to Toledo when she married Jack Feldstein in the 1920's. (I was never sure about how Gert & Jack met). Jerry was my Dad's first cousin. Yet, they were very close in age.

The Feldstein family in Toledo, & the Goodman family in Toronto, always stayed in touch & visited each other often. My wife Eleanor & I last visited Jerry in Toledo in the summer of 2017, just after he was recognized with the "Mensch of the Year Award". Though he was (in typical Jerry fashion) quite humble about the award, we took a great sense of pride when learning about it.

As has already been said: our hearts [also] go out to all who loved Jerry - the very lovable, kind, caring person.

To the Feldstein family,
I remember as a young kid how excited my father Julius Goodman was whenever we drove to Toledo or when Jerry came in to Toronto for a visit.
My father always tried to accomodate him when he came to Toronto and I also enjoyed meeting his two sons and daughter Marla.

I only got to know Jerry a few years ago. I played softball with his sons, mostly with Mark, for many years in the B'Nai B'Rith Softball League many years ago. Jerry went out to lunch several times with our ROMEO (Retired Old Men Eating Out) group for a few years. He was very humble and soft-spoken. This hid a mind that was still sharp into his nineties! As the perfunctory leader of the group, I inform the members of the next "meeting." After he gave up on email, I would call Jerry every week. We would have a short, albeit interesting, discussion each week. He ALWAYS thanked me for thinking of him. After several months, Jerry asked me, politely as always, to not continue to call him. It was getting to be too much of a problem for him to go out to lunch with us. I missed Jerry from that day forward. I will continue to miss him for the rest of my life. I would see Jerry occasionally at Friday night services at Temple Shomer Emunim. I will miss that, too! My heart goes out to all who loved Jerry. He was a very lovable, kind, caring person! Every time I saw him, he greeted me warmly, and with a grin that could light up a room. We were all so lucky to have Jerry in our lives!
