My tears will not stop, my heart is broken, I cannot bear the pain of never seeing Dr Upamaka again. He was always so good to me, he cared about me, not as a patient, but as a human being. He was the real deal, genuine, kind, caring & compassionate. I wish all Dr's and caregivers could be more like him. He never made me feel like I was wasting his time, he sat with me and held my hand while I cried in pain from my heart surgery. I knew he wished he could take it from me and felt helpless because he couldn't. He grieved with me when I had a stillborn in '96, comforting me with his sincere & kind words. I will never forget him. My heart aches for his family, I'm so sorry for the pain you are all going through.

Dr. Upamaka saved my moms life and that began a wonderful friendship between them. Two year ago I had to see a cardiologist and there was no question in my mind where I was going to go. He knew who my son was right away and myself as soon as I mentioned my mothers name. My mother was one of his first patients and the new practice. He will be deeply missed, that was the last connection I had with my mom as she passed away 4 yrs ago, not heart related. What a wonderful doctor and person.

Dr Upamaka saved my (Benny) life 8 years ago. Went in with complaint of left shoulder pain. When they did cardiac testing we were shocked when he told us of test failure. Turned out I had severe coronary artery blockage in 3 places!
He was so dedicated to his patients on a personal level.
He was generous in his time with us. Doctors like him are very hard to come by. We held him in the highest regard.
We will dearly miss him, his easy demeanor, his sense of humor, his compassion and his healing hands.
Prayers for his wife & family.
Please accept our deepest condolences.

We are shocked and in disbelief about Gopi. I started working with Gopi in the nineties when we were both starting our careers at Toledo hospital. Gopi was always a gentleman with all his colleagues and staff. He was particularly compassionate about his patients and he always took care of his patients to the best of his abilities. He always stated that his professional goal was always to strive to provide the best care possible.
We will miss him dearly.

Gopinath Upamaka saved my life. Without his decision to take action and break with common protocol for a patient with an unknown ailment I would not be alive today. I am eternally grateful. Hearing of his passing deeply saddens me. I'm sure he saved countless other lives. He made the world a better place. My sincere deepest condolences to his friends and family.

It always seems that the best among us leave this life far too soon.
I first met Gopi soon after his arrival at Toledo Hospital, where I was working in cardiac rehab. While there, I saw him earn the gratitude of his patients, as well as the respect and admiration of physicians and staff.
At various times, he cared for both of my parents, and they were each genuinely impressed by his caring demeanor.
Although I´ve been gone from Toledo for some years, I´ll always remember Gopi as one of the nicest physicians with whom I´ve ever had the pleasure of interacting.
Anuradha, Navin, Neelima, Satya and Raghu ... I´m so sorry for your loss, but I hope the number of messages posted here can bring you a bit of comfort by seeing that Gopi touched so very many lives.
While saddened by his leaving us, we´re all richer for having been granted the opportunity to have crossed paths with him.

Dr. Upamaka was extremely generous with his time and expertise. Every encounter with him was a pleasant experience. He left you with more knowledge and the feeling that he could be approached at any time to discuss patient care regardless of his involvement with the patient you were concerned about. I looked forward to any time I might cross his path in the halls of TTH over the last 24 years I had been privileged to know him. His loss as a clinician is immense. My prayers are for his wife and family, that their faith will offer some comfort for what I can only imagine is a devastating time.

I was so shocked and saddened to hear of the passing of Dr Upamaka. I first met him in 2000 when I took my dad to see him. He took such great care of him until he passed in 2019. My dad was an old farmer and Gopi would talk farming to my dad even though he had no knowledge of farming. My dad loved him. He became my cardiologist when I needed one. I am heartbroken at the loss of such a caring and talented physician. There will be a huge hole in Toledo cardiology care with his death.

I could never properly put into words how much Gopi meant to me. He was a father figure, a mentor, and a close friend. I loved him like a father, and we went out of his way to make sure I knew he loved me like a son. Growing up, I spent entirely way too much time over at the Upamaka house, since Navin and I were best friends. He never said it, but I think Gopi recognized that I was dealing with a difficult situation at home with an ugly divorce and therefore went out of his way to make me feel safe and loved. He, Anu, Navin and Neely always opened their home up to me and made me feel like a part of the family every chance they could. I will never be able to fully express my gratitude for this.
I had the opportunity to shadow Gopi for my senior project in high school, and I saw firsthand what an incredible and thoughtful doctor he was, and how his patients revered him. Watching him interact with his patients and treat them all like his own family made a lasting impression on me and helped shaped my character as a man. He taught me so many valuable lessons, whether he knew it or not. I was so honored and grateful to have him at my wedding just 3 months ago and hear him tell me that he loved me one last time.
The world feels so much less joyful and fun without Gopi, but I know that I will always carry him in my heart by demonstrating the qualities he emulated: kindness, generosity, treating people with respect and dignity, having fun/laughing/and not taking life too seriously, and of course - relentless love for one's family. My deepest sympathies to Navin, Anu, and Neely - my heart is hurting right alongside with you, and I'm always here for you three for whatever you need.
I love you guys.

Dr Upamaka was a great man and will be greatly missed. The stress of the job I know he was concerned about but he always put his patients and those around him first. He did not like driving to BG and felt the hospital there could not recruit as fellow MDs avoid that facility. He was a first class professional and person.

There are special people who touch your life and in many ways mold who you become. Dr. Upamaka was one of those people. He was an inspiration and a hero to many. Dr. Upamaka never forgot those who crossed his path regardless of years gone by. I was extremely fortunate and honored to have had the opportunity to work with Dr. Upamaka during my early years in nuclear cardiology at NWOCC. Dr. Upamaka always offered his full attention and "made time" no matter how hectic his schedule became. I could always count on him for a good laugh to get me through a tough day. Dr. Upamaka was a remarkable cardiologist, a genuine individual, and a gentle soul. He was truly one of a kind. He will be missed dearly. Anu, Navin, and Neelima, wrap yourselves in the love of family and friends and the knowledge of the many lives your husband and father has touched. I don´t even know where to begin about how he has helped me through the last 35 years. Through all of my mom´s cardiac issues and I eventually was his patient too . My first sweet memory of him was watching him walk back to cath lab with little Nevin at his side, while I worked in Radiology.
My mother was so touched by him and while he was hoping to see her in Hospice. He couldn´t make it but, the thought he even contemplated it was enough to bring a smile to her face. What will stay in my mind forever was when he found out about my Stage 4 cancer diagnosis 16 months ago. I was at my appointment to discuss my HTN but, it turned into comforting each other about how this could have happened to me. He even would go out to the waiting rooms to thank my friends for driving me there. I was to see him in his office this week. Hard to accept I have lost his comforting words and pure empathy that was such a positive force for me.
My heartfelt sympathy to his wonderful family, Herbie, colleagues, and his slew of friends. We seem to be all in the same boat though now, broken. Fly high, Gopi, you will never be forgotten.

I am so very sorry for your loss. His patients were so kucky to have him. He was always willing to answer questions. As a nurse I learned so much from him. He always said hello, even when he saw me teaching my students. May he rest in peace.

Gopi always had a smile and an encouraging word. He brightened my day so many times. He was blast to golf with. Back in the days of fantasy football at Stone Oak, he kept it fun . . . I remember one time he drafted two kickers early in the draft and somehow made it work for him. He was always so positive and a joy to be around. I will miss him as will so many others.

This isn´t fair. I was planning to get in touch with him after 42 years and surprise him. He was my senior at Kendriya Vidyalaya Picket school and we travelled together on the same school bus in India . Even though he was my brother´s (Hanumanth) classmate, we used to sit next to each other on the bus and have a good time chit-chatting. It used to be fun as Gopi had such a good sense of humour. I still remember the gypsy (Lambadas) song he taught me , which he heard from them, who were involved in constructing their house in early 1970´s.
Last I have met him was in 1981 in Pondicherry (Puducherry) when I was still a medical student , he visited our institute,
JIPMER, to take part in annual intercollegiate cultural, literary and sports festival , Spandan, as he was representing Osmania Medical College, in hockey and was the captain of the team.
Gopi, I regret to have not got in touch with you all these years . Knowing you , I can imagine how it would have been if I did . It would been the same fun and frolic again reminiscing about the past even though many changes have taken place in our lives as we grew up. Nothing would have changed as you were lovely, full of life, fun and a good friend.
May God Bless your Soul , I will keep praying . May God give strength to your family , the near and dear ones to cope with this loss.

"Gopi" was an outstanding, compassionate, and understanding person, husband, father and physician. He was also an outstanding leader who was the President of The Toledo Hospital Medical Staff when the medical staff declared its "No Confidence" in policies that were being considered. His cool-headed and understanding leadership resulted in a much more functional and collaborative relationship between the medical staff and administration which has resulted in ProMedica Toledo Hospital becoming one of the top 50 hospitals in these United States. The benefits of having Dr. Upamaka such an integral part of our medical community for over three decades will be reaped for years to come thanks to his hard work and unassuming humility. He certainly is one we should all strive to emulate!!!

He always had a smile and a hug for all of us nurses that worked with him at St. Luke's IMC/2west. We were the old nurse's that had tea time at 2PM (thanks to Kathy Queen trying to expand our knowledge of the world's finer things). Dr. U loved it and often timed his rounds so that he could partake...lol. It was a joy to have known him.
