Mr. Howe was a hero of mine growing up as a young hockey player. I was honored to meet him many times and he was always so kind and generous. His lawyer lived on my street and one day Gordie pulled up into our driveway in his Ford Astrovan and just wanted to pay a visit. I was awed! To the Howe family, our deepest condolences. May God rest Gordie's soul and Christ bring you all consolation.

Years ago in a Saskatoon high school, Gordie Howe asked my Mom (Shirley Wilson) out on a date -- she turned him down because he was too tall! Good thing I loved who was to become my father, because life would sure have been different! Condolences to the family on learning to live without this great man with you.

I just want to say that Mr. Hockey will be sorely missed. Born and raised in Detroit, I quickly became a fan of him and the game. I have met many players during my time there, but not once have I had the pleasure or honor of meeting Mr. Howe. I have moved to Kentucky and been away from any of my favorite hometown teams. I have always regretted never having to meet the ultimate legend of the game. It saddens me so knowing that it will never happen now. My love, thoughts, and prayers go out to the Howe family. May God heal your aching hearts for I know how it hurts to lose a parent.

Deepest sympathy to the Howe family. Mr. Gordon Howe was an inspiring hero in every sense of the word--obviously to hockey fans around the world--but also to the everyday people of this region. I want my children to remember his example of courage, the willingness to do every job that needs doing, and not giving up even when the burden gets heavy. God Bless.

I didn't really know Gordie Howe but I met him several times, the first when I was about 8 years old. We lived in a real "hockey neighborhood" when I was a kid in Detroit. Howey Young lived on my street but on the other side of Plymouth Rd. I was Alex Delvecchio's and Lefty Wilson's Detroit Free Press paperboy and Marty Pavelich lived just two doors south of our house for five or six years in the late 1950's.. He and Gordie were very good friends -- in fact, my dad once told me that Howe's sons were named for the Pavelich brothers, Marty and his brother (the hall of fame linesman) Mark. Mr. Pavelich frequently had backyard barbecues in the summer and many Red Wings players and their families would come by and hang out, including Gordie and his family. Often we neighborhood kids would be out front playing street hockey with a tennis ball and one time Gordie called us up to Marty's porch and taped up our sticks for us "the way the Red Wings do it." Years later, after I graduated from high school, I was earning money for college tuition as the night cook at Christoff's in Dearborn. where Gordie was an occasional diner/customer. At the bar one night, I got to meet him again and told him the story of the day he taped up my street hockey stick. He said he actually remembered that day and from then on, whenever he would leave the restaurant , Gordie would always stick his head in the kitchen and tell me "Marty says hi!"
.......
Gordie Howe was the Babe Ruth of hockey. Maybe the Babe with Ted Williams and Hank Aaron all rolled into one. I can't even count the times he made us all jump up cheering and yelling while watching him on "Hockey Night In Canada" on our old black and white TV the basement , or the thrill of seeing a "Gordie Howe hat trick" in person at the old Olympia stadium. And I'll never forget the warmth and friendship hockey's greatest player extended to a bunch of little kids in northwest Detroit and the good humor and down to earth humility he offered to a teenage cook a few years later.

Gordie I will miss you man. You introduced me to hockey as a youngster, and I will never forget all the great times, and great hockey at the Olympia. When Gordie retired, he and Barbara sat 4 rows behind my dad's seats, and all through the games he would sign every kids program who asked, and never acted like it was a chore. The classiest man is hockey is now gone, and no one will ever fill his skates. Good bye Gordie, I love you man!

Such a dynamite MAN. We are huge RED WING fans from across the river in Windsor Ont. Canada. I remember watching him play hockey when I was just a kid. Nobody will ever be like him....that's why he is "MR. Hockey". When he came to Windsor a few years back, for his book signing just down the street from our house, I brought my one daughter with me and he signed a small hockey stick for both of us, such a vibrant, very outgoing personality and took the time to talk to us. Such an inspiration to many people. MR HOWE....may YOU REST IN PEACE and to know you will never be forgotten.
To his FAMILY....Keep him close in your HEARTS and he will be with you Always.

My sincere condolences to all the family of Gordie Howe; my hero, and model as a husband and father. My wife and I were there in the Grand River seats when his parents emerged from that Oldsmobile 88, between the 2nd & 3rd period, presented as a gift to him. His parents had never seen him play professionally, and their visit was a total surprise. Colleen was 9 months pregnant, and she, with all of us, watched as Gordie cried like a baby at the sight of his parents. He played his heart out almost all of the last period, scored no points, and the game ended tied with Toronto. I saw more beauty in mankind that night than ever more in my life. we met Gordie and Colleen maybe 3 more times in our 86 years and they still stand out as a beautiful couple. Our sons Mark & Marty agree. He is the "Greatest of Them All", because his peers say so.
God's Blessings to you all.

In this troubled world of today Mr. Howe showed us what we should strive to be in our lives everyday. Always give a 100% in whatever you attempt, give credit to those who deserve it, respect your fellow man and understand and accept their differences and love your family. His greatest legacy will not be what he did on the ice but will be what he did off of it. Heaven is a better place now Colleen and Gordie are together again making everything better by their presence. Rest in peace Mr. Hockey

To the Howe Family,
I will always remember meeting Gordie for the first time when I first learned to play hockey at the old Gordie Howe Hockey Land ice rink in St. Clair Shores. At the end of the camp we were all given a copy of his instructional book, "Hockey... Here's Howe!" with autographs of all of the instructors. I still have my copy of the book. I wasn't lucky enough to see him, yet while in D.C. I visited the Smithsonian Castle, and they had a small sports display with various sports artifacts. One of those were a pair of Howe's skates. So, wile I didn't meet him, in a way, he touched my soul. I still have a picture of the skates on my phone. Howe was a hockey hero and the world lost a great figure on Friday. Prayers, RIP Gordie Howe

I met Mr. Howe outside JLA one night walking out with his son Mark. He was carrying a pizza box. I asked for an autograph, but he declined. I wasn't offended and figured he'd be mobbed, so I asked Mark for his. As he signed for me, Mr. Hockey asked if I'd like a slice of pizza. I declined but said I'd like a picture. He smiled and laughed, put his arm around my shoulder, and a friend took the picture. What a memory I cherish; as I know many fans and family have such wonderful memories of a truly remarkable man, athlete, husband, father, and grandfather. He will be greatly missed. I'm sure there are already wonderful stories from the angels in Heaven about the newest angel wearing his wings (winged wheel wings).
And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. May the good Lord shine upon your family and give you peace. Amen.
