Gordon Levine Obituary

Gordon I. Levine

Gordon I. Levine passed away peacefully at home surrounded by family on May 26, 2024. With profound sorrow, we bid farewell to a man whose life was a testament to unwavering love for his family and friends, generosity to his community, and above all, kindness. Gordon was born March 3, 1934, in Toledo, Ohio, to Ann and Abe Levine.

Central to Gordon's life was his role as an equal partner with his wife of nearly 69 years, Marla. Theirs is a love story for the ages, committed to each other with unwavering devotion and supporting each other always. They have three children, Terry, Jon, and Marci. As each married, Larry, Arleen and Andy were added to the family as Marla and Gordon's beloved children; there are no sons- or daughters-in-law. As a father, Gordon imparted wisdom, instilling values into the hearts and minds of his children. He led by example, teaching the importance of integrity, compassion, and hard work. His legacy lives on in his children and grandchildren.

Gordon and his best friend and brother, Joel, took a small steel service center named Wabash-Lagrange Steel, and together built it into a nationally recognized specialist in structural steel, supplying countless projects throughout the United States. Their principles of integrity, diligence and innovation were the drivers of tremendous growth, and ultimately a successful exit from the business. They were most proud of the hundreds of families that they helped support by creating a successful enterprise.

Gordon's father Abe, and Abe's father, Sam, believed it a responsibility to support those in need. Sam would say, if you have two nickels to rub together, you should give one away. Gordon lived by this philosophy and was committed to making the world a better place. He held significant roles in the Jewish and general communities, including as President of the Toledo Jewish Community Center, Vice President of Temple Shomer Emunim, Chair of the Toledo Jewish Community Foundation, President of Glengarry Country Club, and member of the Board of First National Bank and its successor Fifth Third Bank board.

Gordon was preceded in death by his parents, Ann and Abe Levine. He is survived by the love of his life, wife, Marla; his six children, Terry and Larry Robbins, Arleen and Jon Levine, and Marci and Andy Klumb; twelve grandchildren and seven great- grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, May 29, at 10:00 a.m. at Temple Shomer Emunim, 6453 W. Sylvania Ave, Sylvania, OH 43560, interment to follow at Woodlawn Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that donations be made to the Jewish Federation of Greater Toledo (jewishfederation.org) fbo Hillel, the Anti-Defamation League (adl.org), or a charity of choice. Arrangements by the Robert H. Wick/Wisniewski Funeral Home (419) 535-5840.

Dear Marla, Joel, Shirley and Family,
We send our deepest and most sincere condolences to everyone at your tremendous loss-our community's loss. We have lost a community treasure. Gordon's leadership, devotion, deep interest in helping and supporting organizations and individuals, and always demonstrating by example, are just some of his countless great attributes. Of course, his love of his beloved Marla and family is a model of great magnitude. Though we are not there physically, we send our sympathy and love. May G-d comfort you among the mourners of Zion and Jerusalem.

Gordon and Marla were neighbors of ours on Longboat Key, Florida. We have not seen them for awhile, and remember Gordon with great fondness. Always a wonderfully kind man who smiled. He will be missed by all who knew him.
