Hector Ramirez Obituary
He'd suffered a brain bleed, his daughters Ana and Lisa said. Health problems led him to close his Maumee practice in 1997.
Through the years, he provided care on missions of mercy to Guatemala, Haiti, and the Dominican Republic.
"Pretty much my dad's entire medical career, medical missions were important to him," his daughter Ana said.
Through the Maumee Rotary, of which he was a former president, and Rotary International, Dr. Ramirez and his wife, Waleska, opened an orphanage for girls in Guatemala. They also were founders and supporters of Friends of Guatemala Inc.
"Both of our parents are very religious, and part of that stemmed from that Christian faith, wanting to help others," daughter Lisa said.
He wanted to make sure the girls of Guatemala had education and opportunities, said Liz Villarreal Rowe, Friends of Guatemala board president.
"It was something he always carried with him, his love for the people of Guatemala," Mrs. Rowe said. "He would find a way to make you smile. He was almost a father figure. For him it was very important -- compassion to other people and involvement in the community."
Dr. Ramirez, of Perrysburg and formerly of South Toledo, found an artistic outlet in drawing and painting. In watercolors or oils, he depicted scenes of Guatemala. At the former Riverside Hospital, he organized the annual "Physician As Artist" exhibit.
He was born July 18, 1939, in Tecpan, Guatemala, to Blanca Colon and Hector Ramirez. He received his medical education at Universidad de San Carlos de Boromeo in Guatemala. After an internship at the University of Kentucky, he completed a residency in vascular surgery at the former Medical College of Ohio. He later was president of a foreign graduate physicians group in northwest Ohio and was on the board of the American College of International Physicians.
He was a former member of St. Patrick of Heatherdowns Church.
Surviving are his wife, the former Maria Waleska Bianchi, whom he married March 26, 1966; sons Hector, Jr., Pablo, and Luis; daughters Ana Belongea and Lisa Kemper, and 11 grandchildren.
Services will be at 11 a.m. today in St. John XXIII Church, Perrysburg, where the family will receive guests after 10 a.m. Arrangements are by the Coyle Funeral Home.
The family suggests tributes to Friends of Guatemala Inc. in Columbus, the Maumee Rotary Foundation, or the church.

I didn't have the chance to meet Hector, even though he was my cousin. His father and my father Juan José, were brothers and grew up together in Tecpan, Chimaltenango. I only remember visiting his father and her wife Blanca once at their house (farm) in Bobos Izabal by the Motagua riverbanks. However, I proudly knew about all his merits as a vascular surgeon. May he rest in peace. I only regret founding this news too late, while my grandchildren were building their family tree.

Dear Waleska & family,
We were so sorry to hear of Hector's death. Hector coached Bill (Billy as he was known to Hector) in Pacesetter soccer. He was a fine teacher as well as a coach, always instilling the positive in his players. I saw Hector one day in Churchill's last summer. I am so greatful for that visit.

Dr. Ramirez was my Pacesetter soccer coach in the late 80s. I was a young kid at the time (third grade), but he taught me to be humble, work hard and not quit; and more importantly to work toghether. Hector had a strong passion for coaching us, and he proved that hard work and love for the game were more important than winning (although his teams were very successful at winning). I'm sad to hear about his passing, and my thoughts and prayer are with his family. Hector is one person in my life that I will never forget.
