Irene Veronie Obituary
Irene Veronie, 94, went to be with the Lord June 6, 2024. She was born October 14, 1929 to Louis and Tula (Thodoropoulos) Vergetis in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
Irene was a graduate of Lincoln High School in Milwaukee. As a student at Lincoln High, Irene was a staunch supporter of the paper drives to support the war effort during World War 2. Her hard work and determination raised $1000 for Lincoln High to donate to the Roosevelt Memorial Foundation. Her efforts earned her an invitation to attend the F.D. Roosevelt memorial in Hyde Park, NY. as the only Wisconsin delegate. She was also the only student invited. Irene left Wisconsin to attend St. Basil's Academy in Garrison, NY where she earned her degree in Education in 1949. While working in Toledo, she met her husband, James Veronie. While raising their family, Irene was active with the Oakdale school PTA and committed her time and resources to support the school and its students. Irene was a lifelong, devout Greek Orthodox Christian. She was a proud member of Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Cathedral, where she was involved in many parish groups and activities. She enjoyed knitting throughout her life, making many afghans and baby blankets for friends and family. Irene also loved to travel, enjoying numerous trips to Greece and Europe.
Irene is survived by her sons, George (Christine) Veronie, Arris Veronie, Christopher Veronie; daughter, Dr. Linda (Dr. David Fruehstorfer) Veronie and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, James Veronie; and 11 siblings, Ann, Bill, Christ, John, George, Charles, James, Betty, Jane, Florence and Van.
Friends are invited to visit after 10:00 a.m. Monday June 10, 2024 at Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Cathedral, 740 North Superior Street, where services will commence at 11:00 a.m. with Rev. Larry Legakis officiating. Interment in Willow Cemetery will be held following the Makaria (memorial luncheon). In lieu of flowers please consider a contribution to the Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Cathedral Endowment Fund, Ohio Living Hospice or the charity of donor's choice.
