James Hermann Obituary

Hermann, James

1949 - 2021

Jim was born and raised in Toledo, Ohio, the seventh child and only boy to James Walter Hermann and Theresa Bridget Quinn Hermann.

He was preceded in death by his sisters, Kathleen Flynn, Carol Bick, Mary Jo Walsh, and Ruth Shrader. Surviving sisters and brothers-in-law are Margaret Younkman, Rita and Mel Reinhart, Jim Bick, and Jim Shrader.

Jim first met the future Diane Hecox Hermann on a blind date not knowing on that fateful day that they would marry in 1972 and happily remain together for nearly 49 more years. He is also survived by his beloved children and their spouses, Andrew James Hermann and Margaret Kate Berndt of Lincoln, Nebraska and Bridget Theresa Hermann and T. William Cory of Columbus, Ohio.

Jim graduated Toledo Central Catholic High School in 1967 and attended the University of Toledo before graduating from the Ohio State University College of Optometry in 1974. In that same year he established his own practice, becoming Pickerington, Ohio's first optometrist. Jim was a social person and enjoyed talking and laughing with his patients. He liked getting to know people and their families. After forty years of practice, Jim retired.

As a young man barely out of high school he discovered the music of Carlos Santana and remained a fan until the end. Also in his younger days he made up for his lack of land speed by becoming a sought-after church softball power hitter. Later in life he enjoyed seeing the world and experiencing different cultures via cruise ships. He and Diane found solace on their pontoon boat at their house on Buckeye Lake, Ohio.

Also surviving are his good boy, Yogi; countless nieces and nephews and loved in-laws, Thane and Wilma Hecox, Jerry Solt, Elizabeth Jones, Thane R. Hecox and Amy Saylor.

If you would like to donate in Jim's memory, please consider the Alzheimer's Association or your local food bank or pantry. Oye Como Va.

So sorry to be informed of the passing of Dr. Hermann. We moved to the area in 1996 and began our search for an optometrist. Since his office was close by and easy to find we made our first appointments. It took one visit and we decided we had found the person to take care of vision our needs. We were struck by Dr. Hermann's friendly demeanor and his genuine interest in his patients. We considered Dr. Hermann to be more than just our Optometrist we considered him to b a friend. He will be missed.

Even though Sherri and I knew Jim was not well, we were still shocked to hear of his passing. What a nice man, good friend and wonderful caring doctor. I´ll miss talking to him at my annual exam. I´ll miss our lunches with him and Diane. It´s nice knowing that he has left his practice in Bridget´s capable hands and it will be like he is still around when I come in.

My deepest sympathy goes out to the family of Dr. James Hermann. He was the one and only optometrist me and my family had under his care until his retirement. His affable nature made visits to his office very pleasant. His daughter Dr. "Bridgett" has followed in his footsteps as a great doctor. May the peace of God that surpasses all understanding await in abundance for his family.

Sending sincere sympathy to the Hermann family as I remember all of the connections I have had with Jim and his family. Jim and Diane were some of the first people my wife Joyce and I met after we moved to Pickerington in 1976, since they were our neighbors. I was happy to so easily find a new optometrist. I continued in his professional care from those early years of his practice until he retired. Once we were no longer neighbors, it was always a pleasure to reconnect with my annual eye exams. It was also a pleasure to have both Andy and Bridget in my German classes at Pickerington High School, both outstanding students. Andy also went on one of my student travel trips to Germany. After Jim retired, I have entrusted my eye care to Dr. Bridget Hermann. She continues the professional legacy of her father in the same caring and personal way.

I first met Jim about 40 years ago. I was the skinny teenage shortstop on the Seton parish softball team. Jim was our power hitting first baseman. He was always so pleasant to be around and treated everyone with kindness and respect. As an adult, I became a long time patient of his. He was a wonderful man!

Dr Bridget, I´m so sorry to hear of the passing of your father. He was such a wonderful doctor. My husband Joe and I are also from Toledo. In fact, Dr Hermann went to Central HS with Joe´s brother Dave. Joe loved talking to him during his appointments. We´ve been patients since 1985. He was always professional but you could feel his zest for life. Prayers and blessings to the Hermann family.

Jim Hermann was an asset to our community and now his passing is a loss to our community. He is a quality man and i see this same quality in his family. Over the years of his care we also became friends. As our children grew up and married he always asked about Joanna and Patrick. Jim´s optometry staff have always been extra friendly, kind and helpful and I think this is an ongoing reflection of Jim Hermann.
Love and sympathy to the Hermann family.

I remember our first appointment. I asked him about his previous practice. It turned out he had purchased the practice of Dr. Tom Perone in Chillicothe, who was my best friend's father, and was my optometrist, until his retirement here in Columbus. He will truly be missed.

Dr. Hermann was an excellent physician for me and my family since 1990. He fit my three children with their first glasses, diagnosed my eye disease, and referred my elderly mother to the correct specialist for her condition. He was a valued friend as well as my eye doctor, and he always went out of his way to be helpful. He was so proud of you, Dr. Bridgette, and left his practice in the most capable hands. My heartfelt condolences go to you and your family.

A very sad day to hear the passing of Dr. Hermann. I lived a half a mile away from his first office and started seeing him when he opened up for business. I was only 15 years old and continued receiving his care until he retired. He always asked about mom and dad and how the rest of the family was doing. Prayers to the family for your loss.

We are sadden to hear of Dr. Hermann's passing. Our family of 8 kids started to go to him shortly after he opened his practice in the plaza in Pickerington. We all loved him and he especially took great care of our parents, Tug and Pat Bishop. I would even book an appointment with him after moving to SC. Little did I know he was the only boy of 7 kids with 6 sisters. My parents had 7 girls and one boy. He was the best! We send our deepest condolences to his wife, children and family. Such a loss. You are in our prayers.
Sincerely,
Tari Bishop Johnston
