James Snodgrass Obituary

James A. Snodgrass Sr.

February 2, 1947 - November 7, 2025

James Arthur Snodgrass Sr., born on February 2, 1947, in Toledo, Ohio, went on to glory on November 7, 2025. He was the proud son of Marshall and Edna Louise (Barnett) Snodgrass. He was a sibling to one brother and four sisters, the father of two boys and two girls, and a very proud grandfather and great-grandfather.

After graduating from Woodward High School in 1965, he worked for Doehler-Jarvis and retired in 1998. In 1999, he began his second career as a world traveler and community activist. James was a past Commander of the Hyatt-Allen Post, Vice President of the Junction Street Coalition, Ward Chairman for District 4, Board Member of the Frederick Douglass Center, Board Member of the Wilson Park Advisory Board, and a beloved basketball coach. He was a Vietnam Veteran, and he also served on several committees including (but not limited to) the Huntington Center Planning Committee, the Diversity Team for the Lucas County Arena Committee, the New Woodward High School Building Committee, Democratic Member of the Central Committee, the Union Committee for Doehler-Jarvis, as well as the Goose Hill Alumni and Friends Committee.

Outside of his extensive community service, James enjoyed spending time with friends and family, conversing on nearly every subject matter, traveling, and partaking in a good game of chance. Though he has traveled to 4 different continents and numerous cities across North America, he loved Toledo, Ohio, most, as shown through his tireless volunteerism.

James is survived by his sisters, Ann Hall, Marlena Hinton-Carter, and Eva Lyle; lifelong friends, Oscar Hill, Robert Odoms, Wayne Boyd and Sandra Forney-Byrd; children, James A. Snodgrass Jr., Michael Evans Sr., Ebony (Charles Sr.) Snodgrass-King, Morgan (Edward) Gordon; and a host of grandchildren, great grandchildren; as well as nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by his parents; his sister, Cynthia Harper; brother, Leon Barnett; and granddaughter, Elyse Gordon.

Of all his many accomplishments, James regarded being a "Child of the King" as his most important. The family will host a visitation on Thursday, November 20, 2025, from 7 p.m. - 9 p.m., at House of Day Funeral Home. Services take place on Friday, November 21, 2025, at Warren AME Church, located at 915 Collingwood Blvd., Toledo, OH 43604. The wake begins at 10 a.m., and funeral services will begin promptly at 11 a.m., for those wishing to pay their final respects.

Yesterday

I mourn the sudden loss of our rock, Uncle James Arthur. He was a man of extraordinary vision-he had Fathers' eyes, Brothers' eyes, Friends' eyes, and Community eyes. He endured, conquered, and rose every day to give unconditional love. I honor his spirit and the boundless love he shared with us all. His legacy of kindness will continue to rise in our hearts.

Yesterday

So sorry to hear of Jim's passing. As a former schoolmate at Woodward and also a Vietnam vet I remember Jim's enthusiasm for everything he ever set his mind to. I can still picture him dancing the night away at one of our school dances. He was a great dancer. Keep on keeping on my friend.
