Jane Bainbridge Obituary

Jane Bainbridge

World traveler, lifetime learner and educator, Jane Bainbridge, 91, died January 11, 2024. Jane Arlene Bainbridge, "Janie B", was born in Toledo on May 2, 1932, to Earl Charles Bainbridge and Bernardine (Wagner) Bainbridge. She graduated from Devilbiss High School in 1950. Jane earned her Bachelor of Education magna cum laude from the University of Toledo in 1954. She later received her Master of Education from UT. Jane was a member of the Chi Omega Sorority and Phi Kappa Phi Honorary Society. Long-time friend, Jeanne Sonnenberg, said Jane was granted a music scholarship but chose to go into education instead, teaching a full career at Old Orchard and DeVeaux schools. But music remained important, singing for years with the Toledo Choral Society, Berkshire Choral Festival, and the St. Paul's Lutheran Church.

A lifetime member of St. Paul's, Pastor Peter Bowmer remembers that in later years, even though she no longer was singing in the choir, she would sit in the choir loft for sermons.

Travel was a passion for Jane. She traveled to all continents. In later years she enjoyed day and overnight trips in North America with New York City and Mackinaw Island her favorites. Travel guide Cathy Taylor said "Jane was on the bus as much as I was".

Jane was preceded in death by her parents and brother, Earl C. Bainbridge, Jr., sister-in-law, Marguerite Bainbridge and nephew, Mark M. Bainbridge.

Jane is survived by nieces, Joyce (Glen) Fort, Janice (Andrew) Lunday and Linda (Lloyd) Jones.

Burial at Historic Woodlawn Cemetery will be private. A memorial service will be held Saturday, January 20, 12:30 p.m. at West Park Place, 3501 Executive Parkway, Toledo, Ohio 43606. Memorial contributions can be made to the St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Organ Fund, 428 N. Erie Street, Toledo, Ohio 43604. Condolences for Jane's family may be expressed online at

I was a student of Ms Bainbridge at Old Orchard back in 1977-1979. I remember as fair, and fun. I became a teacher due in part to her model and love of teaching. My condolences to her family.

Miss Bainbridge was my science teacher in 7th grade at McKinley in about 1956. I recognize her smile in this obit. I remember she was pencil thin and wore short sleeve white blouses with a turned up cuff. I believe she also taught the girls phys Ed. RIP

Ms. Bainbridge was my 8th grade Science teacher at McKinley Elementary. Tough, but I learned a lot. She was also my Phys. Ed. teacher at DeVilbiss. Her inspiration influenced me to become a Science teacher as well! I saw Ms. Bainbridge at the Ohio Science Olympics with my students in 1987!

She was my homeroom and science teacher at Old Orchard. She had a reputation for being strict, but turned out to have a wonderful dry sense of humor. RIP, Miss Bainbridge

She was my home room and science teacher at Old Orchard. Years later we re-connected when I worked retail and she shopped at the store I worked at. It was nice seeing her again! Will always remember Miss Bainbridge. RIP!

Miss Bainbridge was my science and PE teacher my 7th and 8th grade years at Old Orchard. She was tough but fair. I recall one day when she was giving our class a small lecture and she seemed stern like her was mad at us and walked passed me and winked. Then I realized she was being funny and understood her humor. After that, I grew to love her teaching style and she began my favorite teacher. She will be missed by many. Condolences to her family and friends.

Miss Bainbridge stood out amongst all the teachers in my life. She had high expectations, but you knew she cared about helping you succeed and would make sure all her students felt included and respected. I am so glad to hear that she enjoyed travel and friends in addition to being a great science teacher at Old Orchard.

Miss Bainbridge was my teacher at Old Orchard in 1967 - 1968. She was also my intramural leader in softball and volleyball. She was a wonderful teacher and I was lucky to have been one of her students. As a retired elementary teacher myself I can understand what a truly good teacher she was. A long life, well lived and a great legacy left in her memory. Condolences to her family and friends.

She was my gym teacher at McKinley. She made a big impression on me. I wanted to follow in her footsteps and went to TU to become a phys ed teacher. I´ve thought fondly of her over the years. In fact, about a year ago I wondered what became of her and tracked her down in an assisted living home. I called there to see if she as still there. When told yes I just told them to let her know a former student was thinking abt her.

RIP Miss Bainbridge
