Janet Lauer Obituary

Janet Lauer

Janet Frances Lauer, 87, of Sylvania, OH, passed away unexpectedly on July 12, 2025, with family by her side. She was the beloved daughter of Dr. Francis and Margaret Young, born and raised in Chicago, IL. Jan attended the College of Saint Teresa in Winona, MN, where she met her husband, Bud Lauer. They settled in Sylvania, OH, where they raised their 7 children.

She was a captivating storyteller, could always make you laugh, and had a razor-sharp wit. She enjoyed golfing, was a voracious reader, and delighted in the theater. Jan was the embodiment of love. Her smiles radiated sunshine, and her hugs enveloped you with warmth. Even though she is no longer with us, her spirit will continue to uplift and inspire us. May her memory be a blessing, may we carry forth her legacy of love and compassion in all that we do.

She was fiercely independent and loved to travel, flying off across the country to visit family or meet up with her beloved sisters. Jan, Nancy and Peg's sisterhood was the stuff of legends. Some of her greatest joys sprouted from her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. She made a point of staying in touch with everyone through handwritten birthday cards, FaceTime calls, and thoughtful text messages.

Jan's home was a magical and welcoming place to everyone- neighbors, friends, and family alike. Her gatherings were filled with laughter, delicious food, good wine, and her signature Butterfinger brownies. Jan's love spread beyond her family and friends to include her local community where she participated in acts of service and made regular donations to charity. She was a selfless philanthropist who gave generously to a wide variety of causes. She always made time to help others, including dropping off dinners and baked goods for friends who were going through a difficult time, as recently as last week. When you stopped by to see Jan, you could often find her in the backyard gardening or sitting on her beloved deck devouring a scrumptious book. No matter what she was doing, you knew you could go to her, and she would listen to you and support you, providing counsel if needed. She was an amazing spirit and truly a wonderful soul. Her passing has left a void in the hearts of so many.

Jan's memory lives on with her family, her sisters, Nancy (Gerry) and Peggy (Phil); and brother, Michael (Pat); her seven children, Mark, teri (Fritz), Mike (Anita), Pete (Marcy), Tim (Jess), Kate, and Anne (Brett); her 18 grandchildren, Eric, Grace, AJ (Danielle), Alex (Cody), Max (Annalise), Lindsay, Chelsea (James), Mike (Kayla), Tim (Kaylee), Chloe (Austin), Nico (Felix), Ruby, Haley, Hanna, Ben, Magnus, Bryce, and Cameron (Stone); her four great-grandchildren, Niamara, Kaia, Reagan, and Mason. She was preceded in death by her parents, Margaret and Francis Young; her husband, Bud Lauer; and her brother, Larry Young.

Jan requested no funeral service. We will hold a celebration of her life at a date to be determined later. Please feel free to reach out to family so they can add you to the list to be contacted when plans have been made. The family asks that anyone wishing to make a donation in her memory please consider a local food pantry or shelter, or a charity of your choice. Online Condolences to

Jan was a wonderful fun-loving person, and a good friend to my mother and father, Helen and Bill Pritchard. She and Buddy had many great times with my parents - she was such a dear family friend. My deepest sympathies from Carol and I.

I recently moved back to Toledo after living out of state for many years. Jan was a dear friend for many years. We had great times together when I lived in Toledo ( for over 30 years). Fortunately I recently moved back and had a joyful reunion with her before she passed. She was a fun, fun-loving gal and so loved by her many friends. I have many wonderful memories of her and treasure them as I did her. May she rest in peace knowing she lived a great life! Blessings to her wonderful 7 children!
Much love,
