Joan Bayer Obituary

Joan Elizabeth Bayer

Joan Elizabeth Bayer passed peacefully in her home in Ottawa Hills, Ohio, on May 29, 2024. Born in Bloomfield, New Jersey, on May 18, 1950, to Joan Lou Nelson and William Fette, who both preceded her in death, Joan is survived by her loving children, Morgan, Carter, and Parker Bayer, along with many friends who were like family. She was preceded in death by her former husband and father of her children, Douglas Paul Bayer.

Joan graduated from Ohio University with a degree in psychology and earned her master's in physical therapy from The Ohio State University.

Despite the challenges of her childhood, Joan chose to fill her life with kindness, generosity and style, qualities she learned spending idyllic summers with her grandparents on Lake Shore Drive in Chicago. Joan often spoke fondly about how her grandmother, Sarah Bess Johnson, was the most influential person in her life, showing her love and teaching her about the spirit of giving.

Joan was a talented cook and loved to entertain. She was as known for her elegant parties as she was for her intellect, fierce determination, humor, and kindness. One of Joan's favorite pastimes was being with her family at her home in Hilton Head Island, where she welcomed many friends. Those who joined her at the beach house will remember beach walks, her eloquent homemade meals and after dinner clean-up parties, where there was often more dancing to the good vibrations of the Beach Boys than cleaning.

Her insightful one-liners, sweet-quirky messages, and the special touches she added to everything she did will be fondly remembered by those who knew her well.

A woman of many talents and skills, Joan was equally proud of her charitable giving and success in business. One of her favorite sayings was, "To whom much is given, much is expected," and she never took for granted what she had earned. Joan was a passionate supporter of education and gave freely to address the causes of generational poverty.

As an Entrepreneur of the Year award recipient, Joan was an entrepreneur at heart, dedicated to caring for the elderly. She began her career as a physical therapist at St. Charles Hospital, quickly advanced to the role of assistant vice president. It was here that her passion for developing and inspiring others was born. In 1978, Joan founded Concept Rehab with a team of dedicated professionals, many of whom remained very dear to her and still with the company. Her founding CRI core values of Commitment, Respect and Integrity are still a driving force at Concept Rehab. Even before her children were born, Joan dreamed of sharing her business with them, and they are proud to continue her legacy.

Beyond Concept Rehab, much of Joan's success was built on doughnuts. Through Krispy Kreme franchises, she loved bringing sweetness to many lives.

Joan was proudest of all to be a mom to her three children, and she loved them fiercely. She had a uniquely special relationship with each and treasured her "three Bayers."

Joan had a palpable intensity about her and lived her life with intention and lead with love. She strove every day to make the world a better place.

Services will be held at Christ the King Catholic Church on Friday, June 7, at 11 a.m. where the family will receive guest starting at 10 a.m. with a celebration of life to be announced at a later date. The family would like to thank the Cherry Street Mission for their commitment to the city. In lieu of flowers, we would be honored to accept donations to charity their organization. Arrangements by the Thos. I. Wisniewski Funeral Home (419)531-4424.

My DEAR FRIEND JOANIE "BEAR"...

I have an aching pain in my heart as I have heard this final news !

We had just talked shortly before...
Will I ever stop being sorry not to go visit you in Ohio again, as you asked me often ??? Oh, yes ! My heart is broken.
We have been good friends since the 1990-es, just as you came to Hilton Head with the 3 little "BEARS". They where truly little, and the center of your affection !
Parker promised - "never to grow up, and always will have lots of sweet kisses to all of us" !
Carter and Morgan were very sweet, and very mature to their young years...

You pulled me up from so many low points of my life, lifted my spirits, as I was a new immigrant from Hungary ...
What a dear-dear FRIEND with a truly good heart !!!
So many good evenings we talked through just the 2 of us, or with good friends over your great dinners...
Visiting you in Ohio. later with my husband Jimmy, was always a great highlight !
I will really miss you dear JOANIE, more than I can say, and I know your beautiful Children are missing you even more ! Now they are grown up to be remarkable Human beings, just like you taught them to be !!!
Job well done my sweet FRIEND, you left an amazing mark on them, as you have left a real legacy with all of us !
Goodbye my dearest Lady, I will have you in my heart and love you always and FOREVER !

Joannie B: You were one of the most remarkable women I have ever known and I am so grateful to have shared our friendship. You generously guided me through some difficult times and opened your heart whenever we were together. We enjoyed exciting times collecting art.
My love goes out to Morgan, Carter and Parker. Your mother was truly one of a kind and she loved her brood more than anything else.
Rest in peace Joannie B.

The most incredible, strongest Woman I have ever had the privilege of working with. I worked at CRI for 8 yrs, along with others. Joan was the MOST supportive, fun, scariest boss ever. I have the utmost respect for Joan and everything she taught me, will never be forgotten. Joan was so wise, as a business teacher and as a friend, mentor. I spent a great deal of time with her at CRI. I designed her office lol. God rest your soul sweet woman. Thank you for all you taught me.

Joan and I became friends in 4th grade at Forest Glen School in Bloomfield, NJ.. We were classmates until we graduated from High School in 1968, but spent a few 'grueling' summers working together at the Howard Johnson's on the Garden State Parkway. We lived just a few doors from each other for our 'Middle School' years. We spent HOURS sitting in her living room, watching tv. In the summers, we would pull the shades down and sit in the dark watching 'I Love Lucy' reruns (no ac for us). She lived with her mom and sister in an apartment in a 2 family house. Her room was on the 3rd floor. I slept over at her house most weekends when we were in 5th and 6th grades. We had a few wonderful parties at her house, and she had the cutest cat! Once she moved from my neighborhood, I didnt see much of her until we got to high school, where we reconnected. She became a popular cheerleader, I was a band geek! But we stayed friends thoughout. Once she moved to Ohio, we lost touch until I finally got to talk to her about our 50th HS reunion in 2018. I sadly could not get her to come to NJ, for the reunion, but so many people missed her - I think she would have been surprised.
Joan's work ethic was amazing...one summer (1969 I think) she pulled double shifts waitressing and amassed an astounding $5000 in tips...considering that room, board, and tuition at her college was $3000 that year, this was quite amazing.
Joan was a wonderful friend who I will never forget.

Joan was a loving member of the Maumee Valley Country Day School community, served on the Board of Trustees as a member and chair.
She was a devoted parent, volunteer, and important donor who significantly contributed to making MVCDS the outstanding educational enterprise that it is. She was always a wise counselor to me and a wonderful friend. She will certainly be missed and may her children carry on her legacy of making the world a better place.
