Joseph Berry Obituary

Joseph "Joe" G. Berry

Joseph "Joe" G. Berry, age 73, of Perrysburg, OH, (previous longtime resident of Maumee), passed away August 26, 2025. He was born May 5, 1952, in Toledo, to William and Margie (VanWormer) Berry. Joe was lucky to be married to his high school sweetheart, Dianne, for almost 50 years. Joe was a 1970 graduate of Maumee High School.

Joe founded and successfully ran Maumee Concrete Services for over 40 years. Over the years his company had many loyal employees he considered friends. After many years and failing knees, he turned in the trowel and retired in 2016.

As a basketball player at Maumee, he was known as Maumee's Little Spark Plug. Joe held the record for most points in a game for decades. He was inducted into Maumee High School Sports Hall of Fame in 2012, thanks to his athletic achievements on both Panther baseball and basketball teams.

He was a passionate fan watching his kids, and later, grandkids, play sports. Joe was very active in the Maumee sports scene coaching his kids in many of their activities. He was the strength and conditioning coach and the voice of Maumee High School soccer for many years. The support Joe offered meant the world to so many. His presence will be dearly missed in the stands.

As many people know, Joe was passionate about fishing and hunting. Some of his fondest memories were hunting and fishing with his Dad across Canada and on Lake Erie. Joe spent countless hours catching walleye and perch with his long-time crew of fishing buddies. Many of that crew celebrated an annual trip to Pelee Island, a tradition that lasted 30 years.

Joe is survived by his loving wife, Dianne Berry; children, Jennifer DeVerna, Joseph Berry, Andrea (Christopher) Elliott; grandchildren, Brody DeVerna, Collin Elliott, Brooklyn Berry, Ryan Elliott, Austin Berry, Derek DeVerna, Drake DeVerna and Chloe DeVerna; sister, Janet (Larry) Harvest Sikora; and many extended family and friends.

The family will receive guests Tuesday, September 2, 2025, from 4:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m., at Newcomer - SW Chapel, 4752 Heatherdowns Blvd., 419-381-1900. Funeral Services will begin Wednesday, at 10:00 a.m., at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to Maumee Athletic Boosters or St Jude Children's Research Hospital, in Joe's memory.

Joe was a great guy! He did the concert at two of our homes, and we also considered him a friend. He was always smiling and fun loving. Dianne, my heart goes out to you and your family. Cherish the many memories you have.
