Karen Hasenfratz Obituary

Karen Olson Hasenfratz

Karen Olson Hasenfratz, age 80, of Toledo, Ohio, passed away peacefully on Friday, February 2, 2024, at the University of Toledo Medical Center.

Karen was a 1961 graduate of Libbey High School, and a 1965 graduate of Bowling Green State University, where she formed life-long friendships as a member of Alpha Xi Delta sorority. Karen taught mathematics and computer science at Rogers High School. Additionally, she provided mathematics tutoring at the Holy Spirit Seminary. As a long-time member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Toledo, her hard-boiled eggs became a weekly staple at events, feeding the homeless and struggling in downtown Toledo.

Music held a special place in Karen's heart; she used her skills with the violin to perform in various musical groups and across several local senior centers. For several years, Karen was a member of the Toledo Choral Society. She sang in both the choir at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Toledo, Ohio, and at All Saints Catholic Church in Clearwater, Florida, where she and her husband would spend their winters. Karen served as a docent at the Toledo Museum of Art, focusing on the positive feeling and the fun art brought to life, even sharing a good laugh with museum attendees.

Above all, Karen was someone who appreciated bringing joy into the lives of her family and friends.

Karen was born December 22, 1943, in Toledo, Ohio, the daughter of A. Wallace Olson and Dorothy Bernice (Benson) Olson. She married Donald G. Hasenfratz on February 8, 2002, in Toledo, Ohio, and he survives. Karen is also survived by one brother, Donald (Marilynn) Olson; nephew, Christopher Olson; and Donald Hasenfratz's children.

A private graveside ceremony will take place at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to St. Paul's Lutheran Church or the Toledo Choral Society.

It is with sorrow that I just learned of Karen´s death. Karen was an active member of our All Saints choir in Clearwater, FL. Following mass on a Sunday morning, we would at times share breakfast with Karen and Don. Karen always greeted everyone with a big smile, a kind word, and a story to tell! We will miss you, Karen!

Karen was my alpha xi delta sister at BGSU!! She was a lot of fun!! Later in life, we were in a bridge group together, and then even sang in the Messiah together!! Loved Karen´s dry sense of humor and her caring spirit. I will miss her!!!

Karen, a 4.0 in math at Bowling Green, got me through remedial algebra by coaching me late at night in the sorority house stairwell so we wouldn't wake anyone. In exchange, I made her laugh by inventing equations involving argyle socks and kindergartens.

So sad to hear this. I was in her algebra class at Rogers way back in the 70´s and remember her well. She was very kind, calm, patient, helpful and encouraging. A sweet positive soul that made a positive impression on me. My best wishes to her family and friends during this sad time. Know that she made a big difference in ordinary lives.
