Lawrence Shears Obituary

Lawrence Calder Shears

April 1, 1941 - May 29, 2023

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Lawrence Calder Shears. He was a loving husband, father, and grandfather who dedicated his life to teaching mathematics and embodying the values of his Christian faith. Born on April 1, 1941, he was destined for a life of intellectual pursuit and spiritual guidance. Larry taught mathematics at Napoleon High School from 1963 to 1967, Ottawa Hills High School from 1968 to 1969, McCord Junior High School from 1969 to 1980, Southview High School from 1980 to 1996, and the University of Toledo from 1997 to 2011. His exceptional knowledge and passion for the subject allowed him to instill in his students a deep appreciation for the beauty and logic of mathematics. Beyond his professional accomplishments, Larry was a pillar of faith. He lived his life guided by the principles of Christianity, consistently exemplifying love, service, and forgiveness. He actively participated in his local church community at Emmanuel Baptist. Larry cherished his role as a husband, father, and grandfather, finding joy in the company of his family. His love for them knew no bounds, and his memory will forever remain etched in the hearts of his loved ones.

He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Margo; his son, Micheal Shears; his daughters, Teresa LePage, Patricia Shears, and Jeanine Shaffer (Richard); his granddaughters, Krista Elvey-Sholars (Mike) and Lindsey Shaffer-Hollstein (Jacob); and his siblings, Beverly Cousino, Fred Kraemer, and Norma Guilier. Though his physical presence may be gone, his teachings, values, and the love he shared will continue to guide and inspire all those who were fortunate enough to have crossed paths with him. Visitation will be held at Newcomer Northwest Chapel, 4150 Laskey Rd., Toledo, OH, on Tuesday, June 6th, from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. An additional visitation will take place on Wednesday, June 7th, from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m., followed by a memorial service at 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations be made to Emmanuel Baptist or Hospice of Northwest Ohio, institutions that Larry held dear to his heart. As we mourn the loss of this remarkable man, let us also celebrate the legacy he leaves behind. May his soul find eternal rest, and may his memory be a blessing to all who knew him.

It's been about 30 years since I had Mr. Shears for Geometry and Algebra II and I still talk about him. He made us work hard to learn everything, but also made sure we understood those concepts inside and out. I was originally a math major before switching to ECE and loved how we had to learn. Condolences to his friends and family. And thank you, Mr. Shears, for helping me to continue to love math.

I'm so sorry for your loss. I met your family over 40 years ago, when I met his daughter Pat in about 5th grade, although since I moved around a lot we lost touch, but I still think of you all often and have very good memories of all of you. Your family was always so nice to me.

Mr. Shears was my geometry teacher at Southview. He was a tough teacher and I learned a lot. He cared very much for his students.

I am Larry's sister and I had not been home for sometime and I went home last year and had the most beautiful visit with Larry. This is a memory I will never forget and it was the last time I saw him. Rest in Peace Larry. I will surely miss you!

I was one of his students at McCord Junior High and Sylvania Southview High School in the late 1970s/early 1980s. Mr. Shears was my favorite teacher! We kept in touch with handwritten letters during my college years. He was so dedicated to his students. My deepest sympathies to his family.

He was a wonderful teacher. He taught me 8th grade science and the important lesson that without the ozone layer we would all be "crispy fried ".

Mr. Shears was my Algebra II teacher in 1984. I remember him as a tough but fair teacher. His standards were high, and he was an encouraging force. I distinctly remember his perfectly polished black shoes, signature glasses, and weightlifter-size forearms and arms. I am sorry for your loss.
