Lawrence Vanderhorst Obituary

VANDERHORST Lawrence P. "Larry V." Lawrence P. "Larry V." Vanderhorst, 84 years, of Toledo, Ohio, died Friday, November 28th, 2008, at Foundation Park Alzheimer's Care Center. He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Helen (Temple). Friday was also their wedding anniversary. Larry attended Libbey High School and was a proud 50 year member of Local 50 Plumbers and Steamfitters Union. Larry also worked as an alcohol and addiction counselor at ACA in Toledo. Larry enjoyed outdoor activities including running, hiking, backpacking, camping and swimming. What Larry enjoyed most was spending time with his fourteen grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren each of whom was his "favorite". Larry was known for his wonderful sense of humor and his great generosity, giving of his time, talent, and treasures. He considered himself to be "the richest man" in the world. Larry was a 53 year member of AA, allowing him to do what made him happiest, helping others live One Day At A time, while absolutely insisting on having a good time. In addition to his wife, he is survived by his children, Pat (Warren) Tipton, Jackie (Gary) Miller, Kathy (Dave) Smith, Nancy (Don) Zimmer, Mike (Terry Carey) Vanderhorst, and Jeff (Mary Wiitala) Vanderhorst; grandchildren, Sarah Tipton, Becca Gorman, Mike Tipton, Lauren Tipton, Breanna Filas, Matt Miller, Chad Burger, Stephanie Eichenberg, Emily Meagher, Jessica Zimmer, Peter Zimmer, Andrea Zimmer, Jennifer Sparrow, and Anne Vanderhorst; great-grand-child-ren, Jake, Caroline and Abby Sparrow, Andy and Molly Jorris, Patrick and Rachel Gorman, Hudson Filas, Madeline Miller, Eden and Ella Eichenberg. Larry was one of twelve children, survived by sisters, Agnes Gross, Helen Werling, Mary Lou Toska, Geraldine Leganik; brothers, Charlie and Jim. Larry's family would like to express their heartfelt thanks to the entire staff of Foundation Park. Those wishing to give memorials are asked to consider the Northwest Ohio Chapter Alzheimer's Association. There will be no visitation. The family will welcome friends at a memorial service which will be held on Saturday, December 6th at 10:00 a.m. at Bethel Lutheran Church, 1853 South Ave., Toledo. Dear Helen, Jeff and all the Vanderhorst Family,

Helen, I have admired you and Larry from the first day I met you. I have always enjoyed talking and running into you and Larry at different times in my life, at the park, weddings, funerals, shopping, in the last few years in the neighborhood. Helen what Great Parents you two are to all of your kids. It is great to see what a great Life you and Larry had together.
Jeff and all your family, I always knew what a Great Man your Dad is and have even learned more this past weekend. I have enjoyed all the pictures and seeing all the love you all have for one another. You are truly a Great Family!

I Pray for you all to have Peace and Comfort this Holiday Season and will be thinking of you.

Sincerely,

To the Vanderhorst family,

Thank you so much for the wonderful food you provided after Larry's memorial. You gave us all a place to exchange our memories. For many of us it was a "family" reunion. Please know that it was appreciated.

I have a fond memory of Larry and Helen's sense of humor in San Diego at the AA World Convention. I purchased a watch in Mexico because I thought it was a Rolex. Larry and Helen knew differently. From then on, they always asked me: "Do you know what time it is?" I thank you Larry for all the love you shared with me.

To Mrs. Vanderhorst, Pat, Jackie, Kathy, Nancy, Mike and Jeff (and, of course, your families). When I saw that Mr Vanderhorst (that's how we addressed him) died and read the beautiful obituary I was overcome with profound nostalgia. I remember so well the time that your family lived across the street from my family on Hanover Street. And I remember when your folks moved to Foredale but were still south-enders. I would often see your dad out jogging or walking, hand-in-hand, with your mom. Also, they were always so kind and had a smile for me when we would see each other out shopping or on the street as the years went by. The love they shared has been obviously passed down to you children and your families. I believe I can recognize your dad's powerful faith and true happiness because I, too, was raised by a very loving father and mother. A parent's legacy and integrity and love are captured in the lives of their children and your family is one of the best examples. When our paths have crossed over the years since we were neighbors, you have always had smiles on your faces and laughter in your voices and we have shared some fond memories... most recently when Mike and Becca visited us at our son's funeral visitation. Your family has always been very kind to me. I know you will miss your Dad and Husband but he is still teaching you and showing you how to carry on while he is away. May God continue to bless all of you and your families.
I count you as forever friends ....

Larry has touched numerous people with his sobriety and will be missed!
One of his famous quotes was: "Read the first 3 words on page 112 in the Big Book".
He will be sadly missed!

Helen and Family.
I was introduced to all of you through the progam when my dad (Larry Ritson )became a member and Larry then became his sponser.
I remember helping at the Wayne Group before meetings putting out ashtrays with the members, a very close group back then.
I also remember that pool in the back yard that was a big hole in the ground with just a liner in place. When I tell stories of those old days I always talk about that pool on Foredale.

I have continued to have the pleasure of seeing Helen, Larry and at time Mike at differnt AA functions or meetings
with my husband, John, who is an active member.
Helen I thank you for bringing Larry to my brother Todd's funeral last year, and also my other brother, Steve, funeral 20 years ago, it justs shows how much you and Larry care about other people and my parents felt your support after all those years, just like it was yesterday.
May God hold all of you close to him and bless you with all those wonderful memories of Larry.
God Bless.

Helen and Family
Larry always new the secret to a happy and rich life - doing for others.
We remember the first year of sobriety (38 Years ago) when Larry said the secret was meetings, meetings, meetings. He not only suggested them, he went to every one. I received as much solid AA from the wise plumber to and from the meetings, and sometimes over a taco or enchalada, as I got at the meetings. Thank you for loaning Larry to us all those years. He wouldn't have had it any other way.
Can you imagine the size of the AA Convention Larry is attending? Our best wishes to you all.

Helen:
I'm sorry to hear about Larry's passing. I am so grateful that I got over to visit him and leave him one last "post it".

Larry was such a blessing to so many, myself included. Working with him at ACA was one of the highlights of my recovery. And the ACA pool party at your house....with him and Peggy S. racing in the pool is a memory that always makes me laugh.
We had so many good times during those years.

I will always remember him as that wonderful, loving, sweet, vibrant and fiesty man.

Mom, Mike, Jeff, Jackie, Kathy, Nancy & Pat,
I want you to know how sorry I am and that my thoughts and prayers are always with you. I also wanted to share a story with you about PaPa. Before I married into your wonderful family, Mike and I were at the house on Foredale and PaPa was swimming in the "pool" in the back yard, which at that time was a hole in the ground with a plasitc liner. He had his dark rimmed glasses at the time as well. As I recall it was kind of cool outside and I remember whispering to Mike about this and he said that Dad thought he was a frog and then relayed to PaPa that I said he looked like a frog. It became the joke with me and dad for a long time. At the time I also worried it would not help my chances of becoming part of the Vanderhorst family.
