I was working at the Lucas County Early Vote Center (EVC) in downtown Toledo on Earth Day, April 22, 2014. To commemorate Earth Day, Owens Community College, with satellite classrooms down the hall from the EVC, offered each building visitor a free blue spruce tree seedling.
I took my poly-bagged seedling, a mere wisp about ten inches long, home in my briefcase. I was tempted not to plant it assuming that I'd be long gone before it grew to any worthwhile height.
I remember Les, with whom I worked at the EVC in previous years, talking about his mature blue spruce tree, so I phoned him asking for advice. Should I bother planting my seedling?
Les was emphatic saying that it would grow fast just as his blue spruce tree did. So, I plunked down my promising seedling into my backyard soil--hoping for rapid growth.
Well, thanks to Les's encouragement and Mother Nature, I now have a beautiful blue spruce tree growing like crazy. It would make a great live or cut Christmas tree.
I've named my tree: "The Leslie W. Courts, Sr. Tree".
In this photo I'm toasting the memory of that great guy.

I worked with Les at Dana Corporation's Spicer Transmission Division on Bennett Road in the '70's and 80's. Always a great guy! So easy to talk to. My condolences to his entire extended family.

He was a great deacon in our church for a while, and a good friend to have.
