Lloyd Lapp Obituary

Lloyd B. Lapp, 90 years, passed away Thursday, January 26, 2006, in the Henderson House Assisted Living Facility where he had been a resident since August, 2005. Lloyd was a graduate of Toledo Scott High School. After graduation from the University of Toledo with a Bachelor of Arts degree in education and a Master of Arts degree in history, Lloyd completed all requirements, except the dissertation, for a doctoral degree in history at the University of Michigan.
Lloyd joined the Army in January 1942 and was selected to be in the Headquarters of the Third Armored Division. Shortly after D-Day, Lloyd was sent to England then France and Belgium as part of the First Airborne Army where he was assigned to the Plans and Operations Section. After the end of the war in Europe, he was transferred back to the States in preparation for shipment to the Pacific. His next assignment was to have been as a part of the advance detachment that left for the Pacific before the dropping of the a-bomb. Lloyd had taken his last leave before going overseas when the bombs were dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Instead of going overseas, his colonel had him re-assigned to his previous outfit to take the place of a master sergeant who was being discharged. Lloyd was discharged in November 1945 having received the EAME Theater Ribbon with three Bronze Stars, the American Theater Ribbon Good Conduct Medal, and the World War II Victory Medal.
After the war, Lloyd returned to The University of Toledo to teach history, where he achieved the rank of Professor. During his nearly 40 years at the University, Lloyd taught courses ranging from western civilization to American revolutionary history to English history and finally constitutional history-his passion and one of his many areas of expertise. Lloyd also served as a departmental advisor and assistant to the department chair before accepting a position as College Advisor in the College of Arts and Sciences. Upon his retirement in 1984 Lloyd was named Professor Emeritus.
Lloyd believed strongly in giving back to the University and in addition to his years of teaching at The University of Toledo, Lloyd endowed scholarships in the Colleges of Arts and Sciences, Business Administration, Education, and Law. He was elected to Phi Beta Kappa at the University of Michigan. He was also active in the Honor Societies of Phi Kappa Phi and Phi Alpha Theta. Lloyd's lifelong advocacy of The University of Toledo was also demonstrated by his membership in the Golden Alumni Society, the President's Club, the Jesup W. Scott Society, the Endowment Benefactors, and the Heritage Society.
Lloyd enjoyed playing bridge, listening to music, playing the piano, going to movies, reading, bowling, taking computer lessons at the library, and developing investment strategies. He was a supporter of the Friends of the Library, the Toledo Symphony, the Toledo Museum of Art, WGTE, and the Toledo Community Foundation.
Lloyd's family and many friends will fondly remember Lloyd as a kind, patient, gentle man with a wonderful sense of humor. He influenced countless lives by his example of putting others first, his endless patience, and his non-judgmental acceptance of others. Above all else, Lloyd was a devoted husband and father. His wife, Betty was the great love of his life-their commitment and devotion to each other everlasting. With his dignity and compassion, Lloyd was an outstanding role model for his two sons.
Lloyd was preceded in death by his wife of 58 years, the former Betty J. Ash; his parents, Bertha (Albrecht) and William Lapp; his sister, Naomi "Dolly" Merrell and his brother, Arnold Lapp. Survivors include Lloyd's sons, Alan (Susan) and James (Nancy); sister-in-law, Nellie and three nieces and their families.
Friends will be received on Sunday, January 29th, 2006, from 3-7 p.m. at the J. Jeffrey Fretti Funeral Home, 5045 W. Sylvania Avenue, (at Corey Rd.) 419-843-1117, Toledo, OH 43623. There will be a memorial service on Monday, January 30, at 11:00 a.m. at Monroe Street United Methodist Church, 3613 Monroe Street, Toledo, OH 43606, followed by a reception. Interment will be private at Toledo Memorial Park.
Tributes to Lloyd's memory may be made to the Betty and Lloyd B. Lapp Academic Award in History at The University of Toledo, Hospice of Northwest Ohio, or to the charity of the donor's choice.
The family wishes to express its heartfelt appreciation to Penny Henderson and all of the devoted caregivers at Henderson House, and to the members of his Hospice of Northwest Ohio team, who made his last months comfortable and dignified.

We were saddened to learn of Prof. Lapp's demise. We remember him as a brilliant historian, and a kind and gentle man. I worked with him for many years in the college office, where he was well liked and greatly respected. He was one of a kind. My condolences to his wonderful family. Nel Damasco and husband, George

I am out of the city and will be unable to attend either the visitation or the memorial service. My condolences and sympathy to Lloyd's family. I knew him as a kind and gentle man and remember fondly the mornings spent with him over coffee at the old faculty club in Gilham Hall. God bless his soul in peace.

I was a student in Professor Lapp's English history classes in the late 1950's. More than just a history professor, he was a very good role model of what a teacher should be. He communicated that by his bearing, his choice of words, his professionalism. He obviously had a deep and abiding love of education and scholarship. I think he helped instill that passion in his students. It's a legacy that endures. I count myself indeed fortunate to have had Professor Lapp as a teacher.

My wife Elaine (Katcher- UT'62) and I send our sincere condolences to the family of Professor Lapp. I was a student assistant in the History department during my four years at UT ('57-61). Professor Lapp was my teacher, friend and advisor. He was a kind, gentle man and a gentleman. I had the good fortune to work closely with him and the other professors in the department. He

touched many lives and we are all richer for it. Sheldon Singal, M.D. Jacksonville, FL
