Mark SCHAFFER Obituary

SCHAFFER Mark C. Mark C. Schaffer, age 69, loving father, husband, philanthropist and attorney, died on February 16, 2011 at Hospice of Northwest Ohio. Mark attended the Ohio State University for both undergraduate and law school (class of 1969), and served as an officer in the U.S. Navy from 1964-1966. He practiced intellectual property law for 40 years as senior partner with the law firm of Emch, Schaffer, Schaub & Porcello. Notably, he successfully obtained the first registration for a color ever granted by the United States Trademark Office. Mark served on the boards of some of Toledo's oldest and most venerable institutions: The Toledo Zoo from 1990-1999 (as President from 1997-1999), The Toledo Zoo Foundation (founding member), The Toledo Symphony, The Toledo Museum of Art, The Clement O. Miniger Memorial Foundation, and The Medical College of Ohio Foundation Board. Mark's passions in life were his wife, Rubena DerManelian; his children, Carl, age 28 and Cole, age 26; and his standard poodles, Louie and Harry. He was a world traveler, a talented cook, and always seemed most comfortable in his kitchen. He had a love for the arts, photography and music in particular, and was passionately interested in the issues of the world to the very end. In addition to his wife and children, he will be sorely missed by his sister, Anne Bartley, his brother, John (Rose Mary), and his countless other family members and friends. He is predeceased by his father, Carl F. Schaffer, and his mother, Frances C. Schaffer. Friends are encouraged to visit the family on February 26, 2011 from 12:00-4:00 and 5:00-9:00 at the Walker Funeral Home, 5155 W. Sylvania Ave., (west of Corey Rd.). A memorial service will be held at The Toledo Zoo on March 12, 2011 at 11:30 a.m. Those planning an expression of sympathy are asked to consider Hospice of Northwest Ohio and The Toledo Zoo.

Mark was a key influence on me as a kid. In retrospect he was the ideal that we strive for as Americans. I admired him greatly and wish he could be here today.

Dear Rubena, Carl & Cole,
It seems like just a few years ago we were chatting over the back fence in our Gunkel neighborhood. Mark was a barbecue wizard who would make us hungry at the smell of the great things he
was grilling. He always had a smile & a zest for life. Both Roger & I are deeply
saddened by the news about Mark. We thought he was a wonderful man. our
condolences for your loss.

To my dearest family, some things I'd like to say...
but first of all, to let you know, that I arrived okay.
I'm writing this from heaven. Here I dwell with God above.
Here, there's no more tears of sadness; here is just eternal love.

Please do not be unhappy just because I'm out of sight.
Remember that I'm with you every morning, noon and night.
That day I had to leave you when my life on earth was through,
God picked me up and hugged me and He said, "I welcome you."

It's good to have you back again; you were missed while you were gone.
As for your dearest family, they'll be here later on.
I need you here badly; you're part of my plan.
There's so much that we have to do, to help our mortal man.

God gave me a list of things, that he wished for me to do.
And foremost on the list, was to watch and care for you.
And when you lie in bed at night, the day's chores put to flight.
God and I are closest to you....in the middle of the night.

When you think of my life on earth, and all those loving years
because you are only human, they are bound to bring you tears.
But do not be afraid to cry; it does relieve the pain.
Remember there would be no flowers, unless there was some rain.

I wish that I could tell you all that God has planned.
But if I were to tell you, you wouldn't understand.
But one thing is for certain, though my life on earth is o'er.
I'm closer to you now, than I ever was before.

There are many rocky roads ahead of you and many hills to climb;
but together we can do it by taking one day at a time.
It was always my philosophy and I'd like it for you too...
that as you give unto the world, the world will give to you.

If you can help somebody who's in sorrow and pain,
then you can say to God at night......"My day was not in vain."
And now I am contented....that my life has been worthwhile,
knowing as I passed along the way, I made somebody smile.

So if you meet somebody who is sad and feeling low,
just lend a hand to pick him up, as on your way you go.
When you're walking down the street, and you've got me on your mind;
I'm walking in your footsteps only half a step behind.

And when it's time for you to go.... from that body to be free,
remember you're not going.....you're coming here to me.

Rubena:
During one of the many Fun Raiser shows that we did at the Toledo Club I remember Mark sitting there laughing so hard that tears came to his eyes, and he could not stop, we had a lot of fun at those.
My prayers go out to you and your family.

Beany it wasn't too long ago that we were talking about my Mom being in hospice and her passing. Thank you. I am always here to listen, just like you listened for me.
Grieve not, nor speak of me with tears, but laugh and talk of me as if I were beside you. I loved you so...'twas heaven here with you.
Many blessings to you, Carl and Cole.

My prayers and sympathies go out to Rubena and her family and to the members of Mark's firm. We've all lost a dear companion and a kind and decent person. I worked with Mark for over ten years. He always provided sound legal advice to my company that was right to the point. More importantly, Mark was my friend. I enjoyed the time we got to spend together. God bless you, Mark Schaffer, and I look forward to seeing you again.

From the first meeting of Mark and "Beanie" at Paula and Glenn's, oh soooo many years ago, Mark always had a story to tell and a smile on his face. I would always see him at Grumpy's at lunch time and I have a feeling he and Connie are continuing their conversation from above. My support and love go out to Rubena, Carl and Cole
at this difficult time - he was so very proud of you.

Our deepest sympathies extend to the Schaffer family. I know that my dad greatly appreciates all of the comfort and support Mark gave to my uncle in his last months and days. I know that two comrades are looking over and protecting their families from a place with no pain. Our family is blessed to have memories of Mark and time spent with his family.

Dear John and family,
I can't begin to tell you how sorry I am about Mark's passing. As you know, Mark and I shared an apartment when he was an underdgrad and I was starting grad school at OSU. Although we haven't been in touch for far too many years I'll always think of Mark (and you John) as one of my oldest, best, smartest and most interesting friends. I have the fondest memories of our great trips to the sports car races at Road America and Sebring. Mark was simply one of the "good guys" and will be missed.

Our deepest sympathy to all of the Schaffer family. Mark was a true and devoted friend. Mark will be missed more than any words could ever say. The only comfort, if any, is the fact he is with his best friend, Glenn, now at peace. May the fond memories we all have of Mark help to extinguish the pain of everyones great loss.

I haven't seen Mark since we graduated from Ladyfield School in 1956 but I have thought of him often over the years. I remember so many of the things we did back in grade school. I send my blessings to Mark and his family.
